Well Done Break-Ups? Normalization and Resistance in a Finnish LGBTIQ+ Separation Support Group
This article analyses cultural meanings given to LGBTIQ+ break-ups in a separation support group in Finland. It examines how the cultural meanings produced in the group participate in the process of aligning LGBTIQ+ relationships with heteronormative relationship culture, and resistance to this normalization. Based on an analysis of the group’s structure, therapeutic framework and peer discussions between participants, we argue that the group add…
Commitments beyond coupledom: Negotiating relational futures in Finnish small-scale communes
In this paper, I analyze the possibilities for organizing one's personal life around co-residing friendship and roommate relationships in the life course position of adulthood. The normative significance of coupledom and procreation as markers of adulthood has hardly diminished, although the nuclear family model has opened up in past decades in Euro-American countries. I argue that the close connection between coupledom and adult status sidelines…
Alone and together in domestic space: Navigating spatial and conceptual relationship boundaries in Finnish small-scale communes
This article explores the ways residents of Finnish small-scale communes navigate boundaries between personal separateness and the group’s togetherness within a domestic space. Studies on communal living have shed light on the ambivalence in communal relations, where people choose to live together but simultaneously remain independent from one another. However, the ways space affects their navigations of this ambivalence have not yet been analyse…
Friendship at home: Everyday in domestic space shaping friendship intimacies in Finnish small-scale communes
In this article, I examine intimacy in friendship through spatio-temporalities of everyday in Finnish communal living. Based on 31 semi-structured interviews with residents of Finnish small-scale communes, I argue that the everyday in domestic space reshapes intimacies in friendship by enhancing embodied knowledge of others gathered through continuous, routine co-presence in close spatial proximity. This phenomenon, which I call domestic density,…
Child Welfare’s Decision-making Process in Cases of Disciplinary Violence
Disciplinary violence against children is banned by law in Finland. According to the Finnish Criminal Code, acts of disciplinary violence are judged as assault. However, previous research has shown that authorities often find it difficult to identify cases of disciplinary violence and to intervene in them. The objective of this article is to examine the decision-making process in child welfare in suspected cases of disciplinary violence. The reas…
Crime or not?’ – police officers' perceptions of disciplinary violence, its criminalisation and its investigation
Disciplinary violence against children is banned by law in Finland. According to the Finnish Criminal Code, acts of disciplinary violence fall under the category of assault. In most cases, disciplinary violence fulfils at least the essential elements of petty assault. Despite these efforts, disciplinary violence is still prevalent. Previous research has also shown that authorities find it difficult to identify cases of disciplinary violence and i…
Balancing Between Social Work and Prosecution
Disciplinary violence is a type of a crime that still is not always perceived as a crime and perceptions of the severity and ‘educational’ nature of the acts still may affect authority decision making. This is not indifferent as pre-trial investigation carried out by the police has a crucial impact on how suspicions of crime proceed in the criminal process, especially when it comes to suspicions of violence against children. During pre-trial inve…
