Reconfiguring bonds
In 2020, people over the age of 70 were recommended to stay in quarantine-like conditions in Finland. Using Elias’s figurational theory, we explore how older people’s social, material and spatial bonds transformed during the pandemic. Our data comprise written accounts analysed through a case-study approach, combined with thematic analysis, enabling an in-depth view of everyday micro-level constellations. Forced to live in the present
This article explores the temporalities experienced by persons aged 70 years and over during the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland. This study aimed to identify the journals’ trajectories of conceptual development and their differences, and through that, find possible pathways for further interaction between the yet larg…
Attunement as a practice of encountering dementia time in long-term eldercare work
Discussing time and temporality in care work is becoming more central as societies with growing proportions of older persons with care needs strive to arrange cost-effective eldercare. As resources become scarcer, the efficiency of care work is emphasised, and care is increasingly sorted into cost-per-minute units. In our paper, we will analyse the different ways care professionals themselves describe their temporal experiences and practices conc…
Equality according to whom? Debating an age-related restriction in the upcoming disability legislation reform in Finland
Within many countries, the policies of disability and old age have been developing on distinct paths. Even though the prevalence of disability is higher in older populations, older persons tend to be excluded from disability discourses. Taking Finland's disability service legislation reform as an example, this article elaborates on the justifications for excluding or including older persons from disability policies. The paper analyses the public …
