Intra-settlement scaling across the urban–rural continuum
Research on urban scaling laws suggests that cities with larger populations tend to be more resource-efficient, yet whether these findings hold across spatial scales, varying definitions of ‘urban’ and the entire rural–urban continuum remains unresolved. Herein, we leverage high-resolution maps for the entire contiguous United States of America to examine how built environment material stocks, service provisioning, and operational greenhouse gas …
What is the best shape of a city? Modelling the effect of urban form on travel distance
Urban form plays a crucial role in shaping transportation patterns, accessibility, service provision, and energy consumption, among many other factors. This study examines the relationship between urban form and transportation energy use by developing a parametric model that simulates urban forms and their impact on travel distances. It explores various morphologies, including sprawling, elongated, and compact cities. The study defines the city’s…
Does crime (n)ever skip a beat? Analyzing crime heartbeats in a European city
This study applies the crime heartbeat methodology to empirically examine the temporal concentration of crime in a European city (Ghent, Belgium) in relation to police-registered data collected for five specific crime types (aggressive theft, residential burglary, assault and battery incidents, bicycle theft, and car theft) spanning a 12-year period (2007–2018). The temporal concentration of these crime types is quantified by computing the crime …

Commentary
Recent advances in data science and urban environmental health research utilise large-scale databases (100s-1000s of cities) to explore the complex interplay of urban characteristics such as city form and size, climate, mobility, exposure, and environmental health impacts. Cities are still hotspots of air pollution and noise, suffer urban heat island effects and lack of green space, which leads to disease and mortality burdens preventable with be…

Mapping the Travel Geography of the 9/11 Network
This article models the geography of the 9/11 network members’ many travels from the moment the hijackers first boarded a plane to the United States until they killed 2,977 people on 11 September 2001. Building on publicly available sources, and for the first time in the literature, we address the spatiality of the terrorist network through two related concepts. First, we focus on colocation and show that the scale and sophistication of the 9/11 …
Detecting cities with high intermediacy in the African urban network
Due to their centrality, some cities with a strategic position in the urban network become hubs for trade and benefit from the spillover effects of being close to more people. Yet, measuring city centrality and detecting hampering frictions such as international borders is an unsolved complex network problem. Here, we construct Africa's urban network obtained from OpenStreetMap road data. City centrality is measured using two indices: by the degr…
Mobility between Colombian cities is predominantly repeat and return migration
Internal migration is one of the main driving forces of a country's demography. Yet, migration is path-dependent, and critical characteristics of internal migration, including the propensity to keep moving and return to previous locations, are frequently ignored. Here, a model of city-to-city migration is constructed, where the movement of individuals is modelled using the frequency of distinct sequences or signatures. A key novel feature of the …
Reconciling big data and thick data to advance the new urban science and smart city governance
Amid growing enthusiasm for a ”new urban science” and ”smart city” approaches to urban management, ”big data” is expected to create radical new opportunities for urban research and practice. Meanwhile, anthropologists, sociologists, and human geographers, among others, generate highly contextualized and nuanced data, sometimes referred to as ‘thick data,’ that can potentially complement, refine and calibrate big data analytics while generating ne…
Crime and its fear in social media
Social media posts incorporate real-time information that has, elsewhere, been exploited to predict social trends. This paper considers whether such information can be useful in relation to crime and fear of crime. A large number of tweets were collected from the 18 largest Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America, over a period of 70 days. These tweets are then classified as being crime-related or not and additional information is extracted, …
Temporal and spatial analysis of the media spotlight
Items featured in the news usually have a particular novelty or describe events which result in severe impact. Here, the length of time that a story remains in the media spotlight is investigated as well as the scaling with population size of the amount of attention that the media gives to stories from different cities. Based on Twitter feeds, the media coverage from the major online newspapers in Mexico is analysed over a period either side of a…
