Prediction of Supervisors' Ratings of Medical Intern Performance
Supervisors' forced-choice ratings at the end of training were used as a performance criterion for 84 medical interns in the United States Public Health Service Hospitals. A predictive battery, consisting of both intellective and non-intellective measures, yielded a multiple correlation of .48 against this criterion. The study is considered only suggestive, but the predictable variance in the supervisory criterion appeared to involve speed of mot…

Organized Psychology and the Crisis in Testing
Psychological testing and many other areas of psychology have suffered markedly from a lack of understanding by the American public. The public has lost many benefits to be derived from psychology. A Department of Public Affairs should be established in the APA to inform and educate the public concerning the problems and benefits of testing and to make the theories, methods, and findings of psychologists understood by, and useful to, as many peop…
Do Objective Professional Examinations Involve Reasoning
An objective professional examination in medicine and three relatively “pure” tests of reasoning were administered to a key development group of 88 medical interns and a cross-validation group of 83 interns. Results suggest that professional examination items involving reasoning can be identified by a physician or by item-analysis against reasoning tests. Judgmentally identified items correlated .35 to .49 with general and deductive reasoning; it…

Each of 399 Coast Guard Reserve officer candidates and 137 SPAR officer candidates was interviewed independently by one of two psychologists and by a psychiatrist.
