  • How Does Female Education Reduce Adolescent Pregnancy and Improve Child Health

Kazuya Masuda, Chikako Yamauchi•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•2020

This paper examines the impact of female education on adolescent fertility, the health status of their children, and the mechanism through which education affects these outcomes. To address the endogeneity of educational attainment, we utilise Universal Primary Education policy (UPE) in Uganda. Education is instrumented by the interaction between across-cohorts differences in exposure to UPE and the differences in its effective benefits across di…

  • The Impact of Access to Health Facilities on Maternal Care Use, Travel Patterns, and Health Status

Fredrick Manang, Chikako Yamauchi•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2020•References: 31

This paper investigates whether new health facilities affect maternal care use, maternal/child health, and travel patterns to facilities. The results show that the openings of large facilities increase delivery at formal facilities, while new clinics increase regular antenatal care usage. The first facility of each type drives these results, and th…

Because of restrictions on migrant access to local health and education systems, many rural children are left behind in home villages to grow up without parental care. This article examines how exposure to cumulative parental migration affects children’s health and education outcomes. Using the Rural-Urban Migration Survey in China (RUMiC) data, w…

  • Community-Based Targeting and Initial Local Conditions

    Chikako Yamauchi•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2010•References: 37

Community‐based selection of social program recipients has the potential to benefit from local knowledge about individuals in need. However, this information advantage might be offset by local elite capture and administrative incompetency. Using data from Indonesia’s antipoverty program, Inpres Desa Terttingal (IDT), this article investigates which preprogram conditions are associated with community-based targeting outcomes. Results show that wea…
