Open Access•Marie Brien, Franzina Coutinho et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

Introduction Children with disabilities in low- and middle-income countries face many challenges and lack adequate services, including access to rehabilitation professionals. • Measurement for Change

Open Access•Joost De Laat, James Radner et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2023

In this review paper, we explore how on-the-ground Early Childhood Development (ECD) innovators are using monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) systems to guide the design and implementation of ECD programs, as well as how MEL systems can influence policy and support the achievement of impact at scale. We reflect on articles in the Frontiers series “ Effective delivery of integrated interventions in early childhood: innovations in evidence u…

  • Using Evidence and Coalitions to Scale-Up a National Early Education Initiative

Open Access•Maria Gheorghiu, Leslie Hawke et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

In 2015, Romania took an important step toward increasing disadvantaged children's participation in early education programmes through the passage of legislation creating a nationwide conditional cash transfer programme linked to preschool attendance. The programme was modeled on the incentive component of a 5-year pilot project “Every Child in Preschool” (“FCG”) initiated by Asociatia OvidiuRo (“OvR”), a small non-governmental organization. This…

  • Building Evidence for Pre-school Policy Change in Bulgaria

Open Access•Eugenia Volen, Joost De Laat•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

In September 2020, Bulgaria's National Assembly (Parliament) passed legal amendments aimed at increasing kindergarten participation for children aged 4–6 in Bulgaria, with poor children standing to benefit the most. For the first time, state budget funds were set aside to relieve parents of the costs of monthly attendance fees currently collected by full-day kindergartens. It builds on evidence generated from a large-scale randomized control tria…

  • The Aspirations of Measurement for Change

Open Access•Joachim Krapels, Lotte van der Haar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

This Perspective presents the five key aspirations of an approach to data use, decision making and monitoring, evaluation, and learning (MEL) in Early Childhood Development (ECD) referred to as Measurement for Change. The core ideas of Measurement for Change gave rise to this series, and many of the papers submitted in this series speak to this approach, whether directly or indirectly. The five aspirations describe interconnected concepts that ad…

  • Measurement for Change

Open Access•Lotte van der Haar, Penny Holding et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2020

Measurement for Change proposes an integration of monitoring, evaluation, and learning into decision-making systems that support sustainable transition of interventions to scale. It was developed using a cyclical, interactive 1-year dialogue between early childhood development (ECD) practitioners and academics from across the globe. Details are presented in Krapels et al. ( 1 ) as part of this special issue in Frontiers. In this paper, we trace t…

  • Generosity and livelihoods

Open Access•C Archambault, Tobias Kalenscher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Behavioral Decision…•2019•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This paper investigates whether sharing behavior is multidimensional and embedded in social organization and modes of economic production. It uses a modified dictator game varying social distance to the recipient and varying the resource (money vs. six in‐kind resources) being shared among the pastoral Maasai of Kenya. Results show that both social distance and the nature of the resource matter for sharing as well as their combination. The discus…

  • Cash for carbon

Open Access•Seema Jayachandran, Joost De Laat et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2017

Ecosystem protection payments pay off Trees take up a lot of CO 2 , so one approach to reducing the rate of increase in atmospheric CO 2 levels is to reduce the cutting down of trees. Jayachandran et al. evaluated a program in which forest owners in Uganda were paid to not cut down their trees. Encouragingly, payments did reduce deforestation, and owners did not compensate by cutting down trees in neighboring forests. Furthermore, even in a scena…

  • Can Warm Glow Alleviate Credit Market Failures? Evidence from Online Peer-to-Peer Lenders

Matthieu Chemin, Joost De Laat•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2013•References: 8

This article looks at an institutional innovation in which Western investors lend peer-to-peer to poor country enterprises. Using a unique data set from an online lending platform called MYC4, we find that MYC4’s Western lenders grant lower interest rates to pro-poor, socially responsible, and pro-female African projects. Using a novel instrumental variable to account for interest rates’ endogeneity, we find that these lower interest rates substa…

  • The Fertility and Women's Labor Force Participation puzzle in OECD Countries

    Joost De Laat, Almudena Sevilla-Sanz•ARTICLE•Feminist Economics•2011•Cited by: 15•References: 12

One effect of Southern Europe's rapid fertility decline is the emergence of a positive cross-country correlation between women's labor force participation and fertility across developed countries, despite the continuing negative correlation between these factors within countries. This study uses individual-level data for several OECD countries to examine how men's participation in home production can explain the positive relationship between fert…
