  • Immigrating into a Recession

Toman Barsbai, Andreas Steinmayr et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Labor Economics•2025

We analyze how economic conditions at the time of arrival affect the economic integration of family-sponsored migrants in the U.S. Our identification strategy exploits long waiting times for family-sponsored immigration visas that decouple the migration decision from economic conditions at the time of arrival. A one pp higher unemployment rate at arrival decreases annual wage income by four percent in the short run and two percent in the longer r…

  • Information and immigrant settlement

Open Access•Toman Barsbai, Victoria Licuanan et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Development Economics•2024•References: 6

We study a randomly-assigned program providing information on U.S. settlement for new Filipino immigrants. The intervention, a 2.5-hour pre-departure training and an accompanying paper handbook, has no effect on employment, settlement, and subjective wellbeing, but leads immigrants to acquire substantially fewer social network connections. We rationalize these findings with a simple model, showing that information and social network links are sub…

  • Overconfidence and Risk Taking in the Field

Toman Barsbai, Ulrich Schmidt et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 39

We argue that overconfidence wrongly inflates the expected returns to a risky income-generating activity. Overconfidence thus increases the willingness to take risks. We test this prediction using a sample of smallholder farmers from Ethiopia who face a risk-return trade-off in their crop cultivation choices. To meet their subsistence needs, these risk-averse farmers arguably have large incentives to wisely manage their risks. We find that overco…

  • The Effect of Labor Migration on the Diffusion of Democracy

Toman Barsbai, Hillel Rapoport et al.•ARTICLE•American Economic Journal Applied…•2017

Migration contributes to the circulation of goods, knowledge, and ideas. Using community and individual-level data from Moldova, we show that the emigration wave that started in the aftermath of the Russian crisis of 1998 strongly affected electoral outcomes and political preferences in Moldova during the following decade, eventually contributing to the fall of the last Communist government in Europe. Our results are suggestive of information tra…
