  • The effects of national and international HIV/Aids funding and governance mechanisms on the development of civil-society responses to HIV/Aids in East and Southern Africa

    Kevin J Kelly, Karen Birdsall•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2010

The study takes stock of the exponential growth in the number of new civil-society organisations (CSOs) working in the HIV/AIDS field in East and Southern Africa during the period 1996-2004. We researched this development through a survey of 439 CSOs in six countries and case studies focused on the evolution of community responses to HIV/AIDS in specific communities in eight countries. We describe the types of CSOs that emerged, their relationshi…

  • Mental Disorder in People Living with HIV/Aids in South Africa

Open Access•Melvyn Freeman, Nkululeko Nkomo et al.•ARTICLE•South African Journal of Psychology•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 30

We investigate the prevalence of mental disorder in people living with HIV/AIDS in a developing country context and examine the relationship between the presence of mental disorder and various independent variables. Nine-hundred HIV positive people were interviewed in 18 recruitment sites across five provinces in South Africa, using a cross-culturally validated diagnostic instrument and a structured socio-demographic and health information questi…

  • Factors associated with prevalence of mental disorder in people living with HIV/Aids in South Africa

Melvyn Freeman, Nkululeko Nkomo et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS Care•2007

The study examines the association between the presence of mental disorder and a range of independent variables. A sample of 900 HIV-positive individuals was administered the Composite International Diagnostic Interview to determine the presence of selected mental disorders. A structured interview assessed support received and factors that may contribute to mental disorder. Overall prevalence of mental disorder was 43.7%--though higher in Stage 3…

  • Assessing Social Preparedness for Antiretroviral Therapy in a Generalized Aids Epidemic

    Open Access•Shannon K Mitchell, Kevin J Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•AIDS and Behavior•2007

  • Early Adolescent Sex in South Africa

    Kevin J Kelly, Kevin Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Social Dynamics•2002•Cited by: 4•References: 1

It is important to understand patterns of early sexual activity in trying to understand HIV prevalence trends and in developing interventions. Early sexual experiences are often conceived of as instances of behaviour, but in many respects such early sexual experience is mediated by non‐behavioural contexts of risk. Appealing to individuals to change their behaviour is not the best way of addressing patterns of early sexual activity. A more compre…

  • Cultural Tensions in Psychiatric Nursing

    Open Access•Marc S Kahn, Kevin J Kelly•ARTICLE•Transcultural Psychiatry•2001•Cited by: 11•References: 9

The views of a sample of Xhosa-speaking psychiatric nurses on traditional healing and its role in mental health care in South Africa are examined. We explore how the nurses manage apparent incompatibilities between their practice of Western psychiatry and the use of traditional healing services. Under normal circumstances this incongruity appears unproblematic for the respondents; these systems co-exist pluralistically in their experience. Howeve…
