Improving Tax Compliance without Increasing Revenue
We study the effect of “nudges” on taxpayers who have varying tax-compliance histories in Papua New Guinea. We present the results from two population-wide randomized controlled trials conducted in a setting that is characterized by low compliance rates and a lack of effective enforcement. We test the effect of text messages, flyers, and emails that remind taxpayers of declaration due dates and provide information about the public benefits of pay…
Distributional Changes in the Gender Wage Gap
Using Panel Study of Income Dynamics (PSID) data, the authors analyze changes in wage differentials between white men and women over time and across the entire wage distribution. The authors decompose distributional changes in the gender wage gap to assess the contribution of observed characteristics measuring individual productivity. They find that the gender wage gap narrowed by 16% at the lowest decile and by less than 5% at the highest decile…
Migrant Youths' Educational Achievement
The authors use 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) data to link institutional arrangements in OECD countries' to disparities in reading, math, and science test scores for migrant and native-born students. The authors find that achievement gaps are larger for migrant youths who arrive at older ages and for those who do not speak the language of the PISA test at home. Institutional arrangements often serve to mitigate the ac…

The savings behavior of temporary and permanent migrants in Germany
Homeownership and Economic Performance of Immigrants in Germany
This paper investigates the homeownership gap between native and immigrant households in Germany, paying particular attention to the assimilation process of immigrant households. A double cohort model is derived, which circumvents the identification problem for separating age, period and cohort effects and accounts for differences in the effects. The empirical findings suggest that immigrant households are less likely to own their primary residen…
The Blinder–Oaxaca Decomposition for Nonlinear Regression Models
In this article, a general Blinder–Oaxaca decomposition for nonlinear models is derived, which allows the difference in an outcome variable between two groups to be decomposed into several components. We show how, using nldecompose, this general decomposition can be applied to different models with discrete and limited dependent variables. We further demonstrate how the standard errors of the estimated components can be calculated by using Stata'…
