Association between Eruption Sequence of Posterior Teeth, Dental Crowding, Arch Dimensions, Incisor Inclination, and Skeletal Growth Pattern
Seq1 and Seq 2 in the maxilla and Seq 3 and Seq 4 in the mandible were equally prevalent. An eruption sequence of 3-5 in the maxilla and 3-4 in the mandible is more likely to cause crowding
Stability of Class II Malocclusion Treatment with the Austro Repositioner Followed by Fixed Appliances in Brachyfacial Patients
One of the goals of functional-appliance devices is to modify the vertical growth pattern, solving several kinds of malocclusion. This study aimed to evaluate Class II malocclusion treatment's stability with Austro Repositioner, followed by fixed appliances, and assess its capacity to modify vertical dimensions in brachyfacial patients. A test group of 30 patients (16 boys and 14 girls, mean 11.9 years old) with Class II malocclusion due to mandi…

Physical and Mental Health Impacts of Household Gardens in an Urban Slum in Lima, Peru
Rural poverty and lack of access to education has led to urban migration and fed the constant growth of urban slums in Lima, Peru. Inhabitants of these informal settlements lack land rights and access to a public water supply, resulting in poor sanitation, an inability to grow food, and suboptimal health outcomes. A repeated measures longitudinal pilot study utilizing participatory design methods was conducted in Lima between September 2013 and S…
Evidence of toothpick groove formation in Neandertal anterior and posterior teeth
These differences could be due to the more advanced occlusal dental wear in Hortus individuals, maybe age-related and with a more meat-based diet maybe favoring the inclusion of food debris and thus probing as the cleaning methodology. Our results allow the identification and characterization of incipient toothpick grooves on the human fossil record and contribute to increase our knowledge on Neandertals behavioral and oral care habits
Variation of mandibular sexual dimorphism across human facial patterns
The impact of changes in purchasing power on food consumption of an urban population in Guatemala City
Repeated measures were obtained in a sample of 200 poor urban households in Guatemala to evaluate the impact of changes in their purchasing power on food consumption patterns. The sample was divided into three income level groups, based on their families’ total per capita expenditures. Results revealed that the purchasing power of the poorest group was less affected between 1986 and 1987 than that of families with relatively higher income. Energy…
Household food security, nutrition and crop diversification among smallholder farmers in the highlands of Guatemala
The study examined economic, food security and nutrition outcomes associated with crop diversification among small farm households in the Western Highlands of Guatemala. The analysis pulled together data from a farm production and household expenditure survey, and a food intake and anthropometry survey, conducted in the same group of highland farmers but with an interval of eight months. The sample of farmers and their households were classified …
