    Open Access•Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard, Marianna Betti•ARTICLE•Public Anthropologist•2024

Coined as Industry 4.0, innovations in automation are portrayed as heralding a new era of change and possibility amid the climate crisis and resource depletion. As research fields, however, the domain of automation and that of extraction are often studied in isolation and within different research traditions. With this special issue, we bring these research fields into dialogue by exploring the mutual reinforcements of automation and extraction i…

    Open Access•Cecilie Vindal Ødegaard•ARTICLE•History and Anthropology•2022

This article focuses on collective action and leadership in processes of (in)formalizing market work. It examines ways in which semi-legal actors employ ‘modes of administration’ and suggests that market leaders enact a form of ‘state proxy’ by drawing on an ethic of collective action rooted in Andean notions of kinship, work, and exchange. The article argues that we need to explore this ethic to understand the uncertainties of informality at the…

While industrial closures in past decades were legitimized through an emphasis on economic motives, current closures are often framed within an emphasis on ‘green transition’, that is, through prefigurative discourses about post-carbon futures. This article discusses how the prefigurative transition framework reshapes the industrialization narrative, seeking to bridge the anthropology of energy and theories of performance. By paying attention to …
