A Place of Gathering: Carolina Drink Houses
A drink house is a residential home open for the illegal sale of alcohol by the drink. This is a long-standing and widespread tradition in Southern Black communities. Based on interviews, several types of these establishments are described. In addition, the functions, both positive and negative, of drink houses are explored. Although associated with a number of social problems, the drink house functions primarily to reflect and perpetuate a sense…
Sexual Harassment in High School
This study presents results of a survey that asked current university students to recall instances of sexual harassment by high school teachers. Although most respondents did not think that sexual harassment by teachers was frequent or serious in their high schools, half cited examples of such incidents involving other students. Approximately 6% of the respondents reported having personally experienced sexually inappropriate attention from high s…
Pornography and rape: An empirical analysis
Previous macrolevel sociological analyses have yielded considerable empirical support for a model that hypothesizes a causal relation between pornography and rape. A particularly problematic issue is that these studies have depended on states as the units of analysis. In a similar analysis using Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas, the pornography model was not supported
The Social Construction of Abducted Children as a Social Problem
Using the theoretical framework developed by Spector and Kitsuse (1973; 1977), this paper describes the development of the issue of abducted children as a social problem. Analysis of this particular case suggests theoretical refinements for the social constructionist perspective. It is argued that the concept of a 'valence issue' could be used to differentiate between the natural histories of substantively different kinds of social problems
Social Distance regarding Male and Female Homosexuals
Four hypotheses were tested by having American undergraduates respond to a Guttman scale of social distance toward male and female homosexuals. Respondents had higher degrees of discomfort toward same-sex homosexuals than toward opposite-sex homosexuals. Results indicated comfort around homosexuals to be negatively associated with the frequency of religious participation and positively associated with having had a friend who was believed to be ho…
