Skating Femininity: Gender Maneuvering in Women's Roller Derby
This article contributes to the discussion of hegemonic and alternative femininities through an ethnographic study of Women's Flat Track Roller Derby. As a site for construction of alternative femininities in the image of a "derby girl," derby reveals how the understudied intragender relations between femininities can be important in challenging hegemonic gender relations. Relinquishing dominant privilege: A study of feminist men
This research examines the question of why individuals in dominant groups may participate in social movement organizations that seemingly undermine their dominant privilege. The political solidarity model of social movement recruitment (Hirsch 1990) is applied to men who participate in the women's movement. This research continues the discourse on the role of religion in sociopolitical change. Focusing on one of the new religious movements that has attracted feminists, Dianic Wicca, the conditions under which religion promotes rather than inhibits political activism are analyzed. Drawing upon social control theory in criminology, this paper examines the relationship between gender roles and the inhibitors of deviance. We develop and test hypotheses that “traditional” females, defined in terms of either position in the social structure or gender‐role attitudes, perceive higher levels of three types of sanctions assocíated with crime than do males; while “nontraditional” females are similar to males in their perceptions of …
