A Spatial and Temporal Evaluation of Broad-Scale Yield Predictions Created from Yield Mapping Technology and Landsat Satellite Imagery in the Australian Mediterranean Dryland Cropping Region
Contemplation of potential strategies to adapt to a changing and variable climate in agricultural cropping areas depends on the availability of geo-information that is at a sufficient resolution, scale and temporal length to inform these decisions. We evaluated the efficacy of creating high-resolution, broad-scale indicators of yield from simple models that combine yield mapping data, a precision agriculture tool, with the normalised difference v…

Making operational plans relevant to forest user groups in the Mid-Hills of Nepal
Operational plans are a key element in community forestry in Nepal. However, the relevance of these plans to forest user groups (FUGs) is under scrutiny. This study investigates the usefulness of operational plans against the backdrop of knowledge, capacity and management practices of FUGs. Data were collected from 13 operational plans, 16 group discussions involving forestry professionals, and 218 household interviews in two villages of Lamjung …
The Influence of Land Use and Location on Landholder Attitudes Towards Feral Cat (Felis catus) Management in South-eastern Australia
The significance of landholder gender and previous knowledge of control methods for effective feral cat ( Felis catus ) management in south-eastern Australia
Invasive animals, such as feral cats, are considered non-threatening by some social groups due to their similarity to companion animals, and this can pose a threat to the success of invasive species management through lack of support. Feral cat management is undertaken across southern Australia, and it is therefore important to determine the social factors that influence levels of support for different control measures amongst stakeholders. In th…
Relationship Between Traffic Volume and Accident Frequency at Intersections
Driven by the high social costs and emotional trauma that result from traffic accidents around the world, research into understanding the factors that influence accident occurrence is critical. There is a lack of consensus about how the management of congestion may affect traffic accidents. This paper aims to improve our understanding of this relationship by analysing accidents at 120 intersections in Adelaide, Australia. Data comprised of 1629 m…
Reflecting on siliceous rocks in central Australia: Using advanced remote sensing to map ancient “tool‐stone” resources
HyMapTM airborne hyperspectral imagery was used to discriminate and map hydrated silica mineralization in the Dalhousie Springs area of central Australia. A spectral feature fitting algorithm was used to match laboratory reference spectra with image pixel spectra, producing a scaled goodness‐of‐fit raster map of silicified “tool‐stone” sources in our study area. Subsequent fieldwork indicated that the algorithm mapped silcrete, a rock composed of…
Performance of Excess Heat Factor Severity as a Global Heatwave Health Impact Index
The establishment of an effective policy response to rising heatwave impacts is most effective when the history of heatwaves, their current impacts and future risks, are mapped by a common metric. In response meteorological agencies aim to develop seamless climate, forecast, and warning heat impact services, spanning all temporal and spatial scales. The ability to diagnose heatwave severity using the Excess Heat Factor ( EHF ) has allowed the Aus…
Digital Terrain Analysis Reveals New Insights into the Topographic Context of Australian Aboriginal Stone Arrangements
Satellite‐derived surface elevation models are an important resource for landscape archaeological studies. Digital elevation data is useful for classifying land features, characterizing terrain morphology, and discriminating the geomorphic context of archaeological phenomena. This paper shows how remotely sensed elevation data obtained from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency's Advanced Land Observing Satellite was integrated with local land s…

Why is American Popular Culture so Popular? A View from Europe
This essay attempts to explain the economic success, the adaptability and social stability of American popular culture production and to tell how these advantages energized American popular performance styles over time. It identifies popular sovereignty as the sociopolitical engine of the encompassing cultural project and disestablishment as an empowering, liberating force. Therefore, the success of American popular culture lies not in any one of…
Subversive Reeducation? Jazz as a Liberating Force in Germany and Europe

Celebration or Pathology? Commodity or Art? The Dilemma of African-American Expressive Culture
In the mid-1970s, Ralph Ellison and white social historian shared panel on blacks in Hollywood film. The historian analyzed in agonizing detail the demeaning role that Hollywood had assigned to Bill Bojangles Robinson in Shirley Temple movie and attacked the representation as pure and simple racism. Clearly, this film confirmed Stanley Elkins' pathology thesis, popularly known as Samboism. When Ellison's turn came to judge the film's merits, he m…

The Musical World of Doctorow's Ragtime
WHAT COULD E. L. DOCTOROW HAVE HAD IN MIND WHEN HE CHOSE Ragtime as the title of his best-selling novel of 1975? No more than a loose metaphor for an age if we go by the published literary criticism; for most of it focuses on narrative technique and the book's success or failure as a historical novel. It is time therefore to start reading the book completely, beginning with its title and the epigram by the black composer Scott Joplin. Ragtime ref…
