  • Qualitative evaluation of the feasibility of a national whole-school program for reducing school violence and improving school climate in Chile

Open Access•Verónica López Leiva, Claudia Carrasco-Aguilar et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2025

Introduction Globally, school violence has increased since the return to in-person classes following the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown. Since then, this indicator has become critical, especially in Latin American countries. In this context, the Chilean Ministry of Education, with the support of 17 universities, began in 2022 the design and implementation of a comprehensive educational reactivation policy. This policy included a focus on school clima…

  • Mothers' Social Networks and Socioeconomic Gradients of Isolation

Alison Andrews, Alison Andrew et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•References: 52

Social connections are fundamental to human well-being. We examine the social networks of mothers of young children in rural Odisha, India. Gendered norms around marriage, mobility, and work likely shape this group’s opportunities to form and maintain ties. We track 2, 170 mothers’ networks over 4 years and find a high degree of isolation. Wealthier women and women from more-advantaged castes and tribes have smaller networks than their less-advan…

  • The Development of Positive Attributes of Character

    Open Access•Richard M Lerner, Marc H Bornstein et al.•ARTICLE•Human Development•2022

Positive character involves a system of mutually beneficial relations between an individual and the context that coherently vary across ontogenetic time and enable the individual to engage the social world as a moral agent. We present ideas about the development of positive character attributes using three constructs associated with relational developmental systems (RDS) metatheory: the specificity of mutually beneficial individual context dynami…

  • Improving Access and Quality in Early Childhood Development Programs

Moussa P Blimpo, Pedro Carneiro et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2022•References: 36

We evaluate two experiments of early childhood development (ECD) programs in the Gambia, one increasing access to services and another improving service quality. In the first experiment, new community-based ECD centers were introduced into randomly chosen villages that had no preexisting structured ECD services. In the second experiment, a randomly assigned subset of existing ECD centers received intensive provider training. We find no evidence t…

  • Does Maternal Mental Health and Maternal Stress Affect Preschoolers’ Behavioral Symptoms

Open Access•Maria Pia Santelices, Matías Irarrázaval et al.•ARTICLE•Children•2021

    (1) Background: Maternal stress and depression are considered risk factors in children's socioemotional development, also showing high prevalence worldwide. (2) Method: Participants correspond to a longitudinal sample of 6335 mother/child pairs (18-72 months), who were surveyed in 2010 and then in 2012. The hypothesis was tested with SEM analysis, setting the child's internalized/externalized problems as dependent variable, maternal depression as…
