Thirteen Aboriginal cricketers disembarked at Gravesend on 13 May 1868 to commence a 47-match tour of England. In British sporting history, it probably was the first overseas team to tour England. It also constituted the largest Aboriginal group to visit nineteenth century Europe. • Reflections

    Open Access•John Mulvaney•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2006•References: 2

Professor John Mulvaney, pioneer and champion of Australian archaeology, offers us some reflections from the vantage point of his eightieth year. On his retirement 20 years ago Antiquity was glad to publish his Retrospect (Mulvaney 1986), in which he described his awakening interest in history at Melbourne, his first visit to the Rollright Stones and his fruitful encounters with Gordon Childe, Graham Clark, Glyn Daniel, Mortimer Wheeler and many …

Only Gordon Childe's death sufficed to alert Australians to his international reputation. His private return after an absence of 35 years was unlikely to be newsworthy, given Australia's intellectual climate and regional isolation in 1957. 1 was totally unaware of Child's return in April, or of his visits to universities in Sydney and Canberra, despite the fact that it was in that year that I initiated Australia's only course in the prehistory of…
