Introduction: Scientific Authority and the Politics of Science and History in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe
What sounds like a laborious set up for a shallow joke actually hits the core of the problem this issue covers: What do the leading archaeologist of the former German Democratic Republic in re-unifying Germany, Bulgarian scientists in the late 1960s and some recent discussions about representations of Polish ancient history have in common? They all operate along fractures in the crust of scientific authority, they mark moments in time when classi…
Nancy M. Wingfield. The World of Prostitution in Late Imperial Austria
Although plenty of research into prostitution around 1900 has already been carried out, Nancy Wingfield’s The World of Prostitution in Late Imperial Austria stands as an absorbing book containing new findings. This is due not only to her broad field comprising towns and cities throughout the Habsburg monarchy, but also to her conceptual focus. Wingfield’s aim is to center on prostitutes (she adheres to this historical term) as historical subjects…
Traktoristinnen, Rockstars und der polnische James Dean. Die Performativität popkultureller Geschlechterbilder in der Volksrepublik Polen
This essay proposes narrating a history of the People’s Republic of Poland with the aid of gender images and hence considers the relevance of imagery to contemporary history. Citing research into gender and pop culture, iconic depictions of masculinity and femininity are interpreted as performative signs of society and its changes. While heroes of Stalinism embodied reconstruction and the creation of a new order, post-Stalinist gender images refl…
Space, time and history in the Polish People’s Republic: The trilogy Sami swoi, Nie ma mocnych, Kochaj albo rzuć
The article discusses the meanings of popular culture, authenticity and history in People’s Republic of Poland. As an example it uses a popular film trilogy. The trilogy Sami swoi, Nie ma mocnych and Kochaj albo rzuć (‘All friends here’, ‘Take it easy’ and ‘Love or leave me’) was shown in Polish cinemas between 1967 and 1977. The reviews were written just after the premières. The article uses the concepts of time and space elaborated by Mikhail B…
Sozialreformerische Frauenpolitik in Galizien um 1900: Mission als Praxis, Metapher und Metonym
Le arene del mutamento elitario nell'Europa dell'800
Arenas of Élite Change in 19th Century Europe is a group research project. At the core of the investigation are the places of élite-building in the 19th century, and how concrete "compromises" between old and new élites were arrived at. The aim is to get beyond certain normative historiographical paradigms, particularly those related to research on "bourgeoisie", "nobility", and central-eastern Europe. Key words: Central-eastern Europe, 19th cent…
Jahrhunderts was published on November 1, 2003 in the journal Feministische Studien (volume 21, issue 2)
Deconstruction of gender and women's agency: A proposal for incorporating concepts of feminist theory into historical research, exemplified through changes in Berlin’s Poor Relief Policy, 1770-1850
The article discusses Berlin's Poor Relief Policy from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century, posing the question: how can premises of theoretical and political feminist discussion be put into practice? In analysing the shift in poor relief, I have taken up three essential aspects: (1) power relations must be examined in a context that cannot be reduced simply to the opposition between ruler and subject or men and women; (2) when does gen…
