  • Constructions of Antiracist Identity After George Floyd: Identity Dilemmas in the Norwegian Antiracist Movement

    M Andersson•ARTICLE•Mobilization An International…•2025

This article considers how debates over antiracist identity in Norway were energized after a critical event—the murder of George Floyd and subsequent Black Lives Matter demonstrations and public debates. The analysis draws on 54 in-depth interviews with antiracist activists and allies, fieldwork during antiracist demonstrations, and on- and offline seminars. Three identity dilemmas emerged within the Norwegian antiracist movement during this time…

Open Access•M Andersson, Kjell Erling Kjellman•ARTICLE•European Journal of Cultural and…•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 8

This article analyses the reactions of antiracist activists to public debates about memorials following the Black Lives Matter demonstrations in 2020. Based on 47 in-depth interviews with Norwegian antiracist activists, we examine three debates about memorials in two Norwegian cities. Theoretically, the concepts of connected histories and reflexive transnationalization inform our analysis, supplemented by a discussion of the relationship between …

The introduction present key research questions addressed by the Special Issue: What is the character of the symbolic reproduction of racial, ethnic and/ or national boundaries and how are they interwoven into international migrants’ practices, experiences, and strategies within Europe’s low-waged workplaces? The four IS papers address this question from different perspectives; three of them by drawing on materials from the food production indust…

  • Gray Racialization of White Immigrants: The Polish Worker in Norway

    Open Access•M Andersson, J F Rye•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Migration…•2023

The literature on racialization has typically focused on the situation of people of color in the Western world. In this article, we explore the analytical value of extending the concept of racialization to analyze symbolic boundaries that rely on and fortify the ascription of the specific skills and identities of white immigrants. The discussion builds on a review of the emerging literature on Polish immigrants in Norway since 2004. It reveals ot…

  • Boundary work and normativity in research communication across time

    M Andersson•ARTICLE•Identities•2021

This paper looks at how research communication in Norwegian migration and diversity research has changed over time. The main themes in the analysis are researchers’ motivations to enter the field and their experiences of, and reactions to, critique from colleagues and other audiences. Theory about credibility contests and boundary work on the interface of the academia and media, along with ideas about explicit and implicit normativity, inform the…

  • The politics of migration research: Research focus and the public identities of migration researchers

    Open Access•M Andersson, G Schmidt•ARTICLE•Identities•2020

This special issue focusses on how migration and diversity researchers experience and perform their role as academic experts in politicised public debates about migration and diversity. In a world wherein experts are increasingly demanded for policy development and wherein migration as well as ethnic, racial and religious diversity are among the themes dividing voters the most, migration and diversity researchers find themselves in a challenging …

  • Public social science in Norway: Migration research in the public debate

    Open Access•M Andersson•ARTICLE•British Journal of Sociology•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 28

How do Norwegian migration and diversity researchers experience and maneuver participation in public debate? And do their experiences and strategies fit with Michael Burawoy's image of Norwegian social science and with his model of public sociology? In this article, the concept of public sociology is expanded to public social science, encompassing communication of research not just from sociology but social science in general. Semi-structured int…

    Open Access•Christine M Jacobsen, Christine Jacobsen et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicities•2012•Cited by: 6•References: 23

In the winter of 2008/09 thousands of people took to the streets of Oslo to demonstrate against the Israeli invasion of Gaza. Young people of visible minority and Muslim background were central actors in these demonstrations. The public expression of Muslim identities and symbols during the demonstrations along with clashes between some of the young demonstrators and the police fuelled the already polarized debate concerning the integration of im…

  • Whiteness, non-whiteness and 'faith information control: Religion among young people in Grønland, Oslo

    A Vassenden, M Andersson•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2011•Cited by: 23•References: 17

This article is based on a qualitative study of religion among young people in the inner-city multicultural Grønland area in Oslo. We use Goffman's stigma analysis to explore the interplay of ethnicity, race and religion in this particular urban space and beyond. An important observation is that whiteness hides information about faith, or even signals 'secular', whereas non-whiteness signifies 'religious' across the racial boundary. We examine ho…

  • When an image becomes sacred: Photo-elicitation with images of holy books

    A Vassenden, M Andersson•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2010

The last decades' increase in the visual methods in social science has not been reflected in the study of religion. There is a rather perplexing absence of such methods in the study of religion, given the importance of visual symbolism in many religious traditions. This article is about photo-elicitation among young Christians, Muslims and non-religious people in the multicultural Grønland area in inner-city Oslo, Norway. We focus on two images o…

    M Andersson•ARTICLE•Social Identities•2010•Cited by: 19•References: 18

Scientific and political commentators on social 'uprisings' and political engagement among second generation immigrants in Europe often refer to quantitative indicators of structural integration in national labour and school systems. Equally, if not more, important with regard to the social engagement and political mobilisation in the second generation, is the transnational transmittance of literature, music, film and critical events in which the…

Processes of homogenization and differentiation have characterized international sports organizations and competitions for more than a century. So have imaginaries of race as these are linked to sportive stereotypes in various sports. In this article, I discuss how racial imaginaries in two Norwegian sports, basketball and track and field, are informed by the real and imaginary links to the same sports in the USA. Theoretically, the article is in…

  • Immigrant youth and the dynamics of marginalization

    Open Access•M Andersson•ARTICLE•Young•2003•Cited by: 11•References: 12

This article explores the usefulness of traditional sociological perspectives on inequality in light of marginalization processes affecting immigrant youth in Norway and in other Western societies of today. Departing from general theories on inequality and marginalization, and the more specific perspectives on ethnic minority youth in Europe, a trenchant argument in the article is that increasing attention to the construction of normality and oth…
