The Bolsonaro Government in the Face of the Pandemic: Neoliberalism at a Crossroad
Neoliberalism is a normative system that endeavors to universalize competition and the generation of inequality as fundamental behavioral norms, not only encompassing corporate entities but extending to the whole society. The tenets of this system came under strain amid the coronavirus pandemic which, on one hand, has accentuated its more assertive traits, and on the other, compelled certain strategic concessions primarily in response to pressure…
Marx’s fictitious capital: A misrepresented category revisited
In this paper, we provide an interpretation of Marx’s category of fictitious capital by analysing its main attributes and pointing out its role in understanding the capitalist dynamics from a value-form approach. We criticise the widespread notion that fictitious capital is a category related to the degree of detachment between its capital value and the value of the real capital that it might eventually represent. We argue that fictitious capital…

Institutions and Development From a Historical Perspective: The Case of the Brazilian Development Bank
This paper analyzes the role played by the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) in different periods of Brazil’s development process since its founding in 1952. The bank’s history is nonlinear, varying with socio-economic and political changes over time. Four major periods in its history are: (i) from its creation to the debt crisis in the 1980s, a period known as ‘developmentalism’; (ii) the neoliberal movement of the 1990s; (iii) the reintroducti…

For a political economy of financialization: Theory and evidence
The end of the Bretton Woods agreement led not only to changes in the international economic relations, but also in the very way in which capitalism functions. The liberalization of capital flows and deregulation and integration of financial markets under US leadership gave rise to a new systemic pattern of wealth, financialization, in which operations with financial assets received increased importance in the management of wealth by households a…

Price movement in the Brazilian land market (1994-2010): An analysis in the light of post-Keynesian theory
The present study aims to evaluate crop, pasture and forest land prices in Brazil, between 1994 and 2010, in the light of Post-Keynesian theory. The results provide evidence that land, more than just a simple factor of production, must be conceived of as an economic asset. In fact, the price of rural land is determined not only by the expected profitability deriving from agricultural activities but also by the agents' expectations about its futur…
