Leveraging international trade for the ecological transition: Quantifying the drivers of planetary boundaries
Low carbon transition's macroeconomic impacts in Latin America
Macroeconomic exposure of developing economies to low-carbon transition
The low-carbon transition is a specific type of rapid structural change where low-emission industries grow and high-emission industries decline due to deliberate policies, changing preferences and technological change. Developing countries’ macroeconomic exposure to this transition depends upon their reliance on carbon-intensive industries as a source of foreign currency, fiscal revenue, employment and wage income. Identifying these different dim…
Supply and Demand in Kaldorian Growth Models: A Proposal for Dynamic Adjustment
This article analyses the dynamic adjustment of supply and demand in Kaldorian growth models. We discuss how the growth rate of a country, given by demand constraints, adjusts towards the growth rate given by the supply-side, and vice versa, and present the necessary conditions and empirical plausibility for these adjustments. The Palley–Setterfield approach allows for a possible reconciliation between supply and demand long-term growth rates. Ho…
Profit margins, exchange rates and structural change: Empirical Evidences for the Period 1996-2017
This research seeks to understand the relationship between the rate of profit and the exchange rate and how this relationship can impact the productive structure. We construct a theoretical model in which the exchange rate influences the rate of profit, and we argue that although an overvalued exchange rate could benefit sectors with high imported input coefficients in the short term because it reduces costs, it negatively impacts the demand for …
The structuralist revenge: Economic Complexity as an Important Dimension to Evaluate Growth and Development
This paper brings elements from the economic complexity literature to the discussions of the structuralist tradition on the central role of manufacturing and productive sophistication to economic growth. Using data provided by the Atlas of Economic Complexity this study sought to verify if countries' complexity is important to explain convergence and divergence among poor and rich countries and, if so, which are the countries that will be able to…
Sectoral capabilities and productive structure: An input-output analysis of the key sectors of the Brazilian economy
The complex relationship between production structure and economic growth has been the subject of considerable debate among Brazilian economists. This debate became especially relevant after the 2000s, when Brazil experienced a period of growth from the rise of commodity exports, which contrasted with the stagnation observed in the previous two decades. To analyse the capacity of commodity exports to generate long-term economic growth, this paper…
