  • Hospitals Otherwise

Janina Kehr, Fanny Chabrol•ARTICLE•Annual Review of Anthropology•2026

This article revisits hospitals as spaces and places of biomedicine, ethnographic fieldwork, and anthropological thinking. We argue that hospitals and technoscientific biomedicine, in their globalized, capitalized, and financialized forms, simultaneously reproduce and aim to alleviate unequal entitlements to life that are infused by violent and emancipatory histories. Anthropological scholarship on hospitals evolved from a preoccupation with the …

  • Responding to Covid-19 through participation. The Cuban experience of community engagement

Open Access•Anna Pomaro, Fanny Chabrol et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2026

Cuba’s COVID-19 response relied on grassroots mobilization across community and healthcare settings. • Non-healthcare actors allowed local adaptations to face the pandemic • They helped attenuate vulnerabilities induced by response measures • Their implication also meant carrying a high burden of risk management • The COVID-19 pandemic expanded community participation in Cuba

  • Strengthening hospital infrastructure in a war context

Open Access•Fanny Chabrol, Pierre Coulibaly et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2025

In sub-Saharan Africa, public hospitals should play a key role in providing quality, affordable health care and contribute to robust health systems, particularly in war-torn contexts. In Mali, a multidimensional crisis has had a severe impact on the health of the people and on the overall health infrastructure and its capacity to respond to the crisis. Public hospitals suffer from multiple long-standing constraints that are rendered even more acu…

Open Access•Leonor Gallardo, Lara Gautier et al.•ARTICLE•International Review of…•2024•References: 11

Context. While there is ample research in the social sciences on the role of private consulting firms in public policy, there is little information about their intervention in managing public health crises and epidemics. The COVID-19 pandemic revealed how much public administrations across the globe have been using these firms. The purpose of this exploratory review of the scientific literature is to identify research on the involvement of these …

  • Considering social inequalities in health in Covid-19 response

Open Access•Zoé Richard, Fanny Chabrol et al.•ARTICLE•Health Promotion International•2023

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the impact of social inequalities in health (SIH). Various studies have shown significant inequalities in mortality and morbidity associated with COVID-19 and the influence of social determinants of health. The objective of this qualitative case study was to analyze the consideration of SIH in the design of two key COVID-19 prevention and control interventions in France: testing and contact tracing. Interviews we…

  • Therapeutic mobility and breast cancer in France

Open Access•Louise Ludet, Luís Teixeira et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Qualitative Research in…•2023

While breast cancer is the most common cancer globally, not all women have access to quality care. Long considered a disease of high-income countries, low- and middle-income countries are now facing a major public health issue regarding cancer. This is the case in sub-Saharan Africa, where access to quality breast cancer treatment is often lacking. This context leads some women to travel abroad, particularly to France, hoping to save their lives.…

  • Introduction à la santé globale

The management of the COVID-19 epidemic has disrupted the organization of healthcare in hospitals. As part of a research project on the resilience of hospitals and their staff to the COVID-19 pandemic (HoSPiCOVID), we have documented their adaptation strategies in five countries (France, Mali, Brazil, Canada, Japan). In France, at the end of the first wave (June 2020), a team of researchers and health professionals from the Bichat Claude-Bernard …

  • How resilience affected public health research during Covid-19 and why we should abandon it

    Open Access•Fanny Chabrol, Pierre-Marie David•ARTICLE•Global Public Health•2023

Resilience had already gained traction as an analytical concept in public health research for approximately a decade. • In the era of humanitarian crisis, young women continue to die in childbirth in Mali

Open Access•Pierre Coulibaly, Clémence Schantz et al.•ARTICLE•Conflict and Health•2021

Maternal mortality occurs mostly in contexts of poverty and health system collapse. Mali has a very high maternal mortality rate and this extremely high mortality rate is due in part to longstanding constraints in maternal health services. The central region has been particularly affected by the humanitarian crisis in recent years, and maternal health has been aggravated by the conflict. Sominé Dolo Hospital is located in Mopti, central region. I…

Increasing demand for antiretroviral treatment (ART) together with a reduction in international funding during the last decade may jeopardize access to ART. Using data from a cross-sectional survey conducted in 2014 in 19 HIV services in the Centre and Littoral regions in Cameroon, we investigated the role of healthcare supply-related factors in time to ART initiation in HIV-positive patients eligible for ART at HIV diagnosis.
