The Use of Economists in Society
This article examines Friedrich Hayek's visits to Brazil during the military dictatorship, contrasting them with his experiences in Chile and Argentina. Primary sources, including correspondence and newspaper records, are used to reconstruct Hayek's activities in Brazil and analyze the cold reception he received from government authorities. The article argues that, unlike in Chile and Argentina, where Hayek was received by high-ranking officials …

The aim of the article is to understand the intellectual milieu of Rosenstein-Rodan’s academic training, as well as the context in which he wrote his first works and their content. To this end, the article outlines Vienna’s intellectual environment during Rosenstein-Rodan’s formative and early career years. Subsequently, the article addresses some of the works, collaborations, and research interests developed by the author in that period. Finally…
Critical rationalism and institutional change in Hayek
The institutional analysis promoted by F. A. Hayek seeks to understand how human action and coordination among individuals occur in an environment where the knowledge held by each person is incomplete and not fully transmittable. In such an environment, the institutional framework plays an important role in conditioning, at least partially, the behavior of members within a spontaneously emerging social order. In light of this, the objective of th…

Reason, scientism, and methodology
This article presents a narrative on the emergence of the concept of complexity in Friedrich A. Hayek’s work. We show that complexity emerges from Hayek’s methodological concerns and, specifically, from his texts that compose the first two parts of the Abuse of Reason Project. Namely, a) ‘Individualism: True and False’, from 1946; b) ‘Scientism and the Study of Society’, published between 1942 and 1944; and c) ‘The Counter Revolution of Science’,…
Ostracismo, ressurgimento e engajamento

Hayek e a Nova Sociologia Econômica
An Institutional Explanation for Economists’ Theoretical and Methodological Choices
Scientific research in general and economics research in particular is a social act. More specifically, schools of economic thought as well as associations, research groups and conferences are expressions of social organizations within the realm of economics. Historically, studies investigating the methodologies used in economics have focused on the strengths of these social organizations. This study aims to analyze the key roles played by indivi…
The paper aims at analyzing the article by Gerson Lima on the manner by which fiscal deficit should be covered. It presents a more general dynamic model, where the principle of effective demand is explicitly used. By doing that, it is possible to treat as endogenous variables the national income and the government entries, what brings the result that the public debt must not follow an explosive path unless the very restrictive conditions of Lima'…

The dissertation aims to contribute to the study of the economic and social thought of Friedrich August von Hayek, focusing on institutional aspects. It starts with a taxonomy of varieties of uncertainty proposed by David Dequech, trying to identify those with which Hayek dealt and why he stated that reality is complex.Based on this, the dissertation examines what Hayek understood by terms such as institutions, rules, culture and the like, and how…
