Neoliberalism, institutional change and the new culture of the university professoriate: The Spanish case
Neoliberalism has pervaded almost everywhere in the world, bringing about major changes in institutional frameworks and social relations. Science and university research have not escaped the effects of the neoliberal conception of university knowledge as a commodity and of Higher Education as a factor of economic growth. This research offers a provisional assessment of the effects of the profound institutional change produced in the Spanish unive…

From the mainstream economics research frontier towards critical institutional political economy
The attack of the traditions of political economy upon the orthodox economics is directed at the pillars supporting its political philosophy and at the core of its deductive and individualist methodology. This criticism challenges the current mainstream economics research frontier, which includes the notions of ‘new’ institutional economics, among others. Recalling the tradition known as the ‘Other Canon’, this article criticises these theories a…

Robert Owen’s quest for the ‘new moral world’ in a non-industrialized country
This article examines how Robert Owen’s ideas, and the example of his New Lanark Mill, were understood and received in Spain in the nineteenth century. It follows recent historiographic trends in the history of early Spanish socialism to show that although Owen’s ideas could not have a decisive impact in a largely agricultural economy and society, his ideas did draw more significant attention that has been thought. The article examines how Owen’s…

Institutional Quality, Taxation and Human Development: The Case of Morocco
The main goal of this article is to explore the relationship between taxation and development in Morocco, particularly among university students in the city of Tetouan. This article analyzes the culture and tax morale in a sample of university students, in order to offer a deeper explanation on the obstacles that hamper the construction of human development in that country. A fairer and more equitable tax system is at the basis of human developme…
Perspectives on human and social capital theories and the role of education: An approach from Mediterranean thought
Current discussions about education suggest that a transformative pedagogy that goes beyond the acquisition of knowledge and skills is needed. However, there is no agreement as to the inputs needed for a correct development of the educational model. In this sense, we can identify the presence of two different approaches to human and social capital which embody distinct educational worldviews. On the one hand, the ‘Marketable Human Capital’ or ‘Pe…
