The unfolding of neoliberalism in academic economics
Radical uncertainty and the effect of transport infrastructure on land prices
Most contributions in the academic literature identify a positive effect of transport infrastructure on land prices. However, their short-run dynamics has not been routinely analyzed. One of the reasons for this lack of research is because neoclassical urban land economics models underlie, in some cases implicitly, most of the available literature on the topic. In this theory, land values converge to their long-term trends regardless of short-ter…
Armed conflict, institutions and deforestation
This paper assesses the impact of the Colombian internal armed conflict on local development processes and deforestation during 2000–2018. The paper develops a theoretical framework of the deforestation process, as determined by the spatiotemporal patterns of socio-economic and conflict related variables. These determinants are examined using a system of spatial dynamic panels by land-use activity, and emphasizing interactions and spatiotemporal …
An urban system assessment of Land Value Capture
This paper assesses the static and dynamic neutrality of Land Value Capture (LVC) in the Colombian urban system 2003–2018, using spatially and non-spatially controlled panel models. LVC analyses are usually performed at the city or metropolitan area level, we contribute by performing the assessment on an urban system comprising 18 metropolitan areas. Our assessment builds upon a theoretical structure, where policies implemented in different metro…
Credit constraints and structure
We develop a theoretical model that explains the relationship between credit constraints and economic growth in the context of a three-sector economy, including an “extractive” sector. The model belongs in the structuralist tradition and it is inspired by the Colombian economy. In contrast to neoclassic development economics models, we prove that: 1) relaxing the credit crunch would foster formal sector growth but it may nevertheless not imply fo…
Urban regulation and land prices
An empirical approach to urban land monopoly
In this paper, we focus on the role and economic effect of land ownership and land monopoly in emerging urban environments. Land monopoly in conventional economics is a theoretical ‘impossibility’ which, nonetheless, allows for a spatial empirical approach. We design a spatial land monopoly test of our own, understood as a pricing strategy where land prices can be ‘over and above’ those determined by city-wide location, urban regulation and exter…
Tourism and housing prices in Santa Marta, Colombia
Growth and distribution endogenously determined
We build upon an already known but scarcely developed feature of growth theory: the importance of asset distribution in an aggregate production function. We elaborate on a simple model of two individuals, and then generalize its deductions to an extended model of n agents, concluding that perfectly distributed productive capital leads to positive and optimum long-run “endogenous” growth. Recent and classical empirical literature on the topic sugg…
