  • Transpacific Circulation of Medicine and Medical Discourse in Eighteenth-Century Spanish Shipboard Documents

    Wim De Winter•ARTICLE•Eighteenth-Century Life•2026

Recently uncovered documents from the Spanish 1779 ship Perla, traveling from Lima to Cádiz, reveal new perspectives on shipboard health conditions in the Pacific, and on their cures or treatments in the Spanish colonial context. An exchange of medical information took place through correspondence across the seas, including the smuggling of medicinal and botanical remedies. Eighteenth-century missionaries and doctors considered uses for and exper…

  • Marital Co-operation and Economic Agency of Maritime Women

Wim De Winter, Stan Pannier•ARTICLE•The Mariner s Mirror•2025

Recent scholarship confirms that early-modern maritime workers were often married, and that sailors’ wives were far from passive economic subjects. They actively developed strategies to augment the family income while playing a role in their husbands’ private trade. Using early eighteenth-century correspondence in a microhistorical approach, this article focuses on women’s economic agency in the coastal Southern Netherlands. Instead of separating…

  • European perceptions of religion and society in 18th-century China & Bengal, and their subverted gaze in local art and encounter

    Wim De Winter•ARTICLE•Religion•2020•References: 14

This essay presents two late 18th century European travelers’ encounters with and perceptions of religion in Chinese and Indian societies. While C.L.J De Guignes made an extensive tour of Chinese pagodas, Balthazar Solvyns was depicting Bengali people in 1794. Both traveler's works reveal a lineage of ideas involving exoticism and early-modern orientalism. While creating images of religion based on superstition and alterity, they did not take int…

  • QUICKScan as a quick and participatory methodology for problem identification and scoping in policy processes

    Open Access•Peter Verweij, Sander Janssen et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Science & Policy•2016•Cited by: 2•References: 4

Policy making is required in cases in which a public good needs to be either maintained or created, and private or civil initiatives cannot deal alone with this. Policy making thus starts with a phase of problem identification and determining whether there is a problem that needs to be dealt with. Rapidly evolving contexts exert influence on policy makers who have to take decisions much faster and more accurately than in the past, also facing gre…

  • Gift-exchange as a Means of ‘Handling Diversity’

    Open Access•Wim De Winter•ARTICLE•The Medieval History Journal•2013•References: 9

Historical intercultural interactions between Europeans and Japanese during the seventeenth century were characterised by a diversity of perceptions and attitudes within a dynamic yet stable continuum of relationships, in which people reached a certain degree of understanding in a daily context. This relational stability was fundamentally created through evolving cycles of gift-behaviour, which occurred on distinct social levels. Surpassing mere …
