Erving Goffman’s Trite Metaphors
The article reconsiders Goffman’s legacy in the light of present-day realities. The author deems the revitalization of cognitive metaphors to be premise and necessary condition for viability of the dramaturgical perspective. Metaphors awaken when they begin to wake us up, come to life when they give us life. In view of this, an attempt has been made to reveal all-too-human and atemporal facets of the tropes we are all very familiar with – in othe…
Between Dog and Wolf
This paper examines the role of absence in Sasha Sokolov’s second novel, Between Dog and Wolf . It argues that the gap is as essential to the constitution of Sokolov’s text as the duality that captures it. Through the interplay between the negative and the positive, the absent and the double, the text transforms the gap into a potential space. In this space, disintegration becomes aesthetic play, and an unintegrated existential experience, ungras…
Social Antinomies of Linguistic Consciousness
This article focuses on the debate over Crimea's accession. The content analysis relies on data collected during the first and most turbulent year of Crimea's incorporation, which started with the decision to conduct a referendum on the Crimean status and then to declare Crimea's independence in March 2014. The sample consists of 50 entries published on LiveJournal, both posts and commentaries. We have discovered and problematized severe disagree…

I argue that both the Russian Orthodox immigrants and the Protestant converts to Orthodoxy attending this parish may be usefully thought of as diasporic groups. Seeking to construct their particular Orthodox identity, both groups deal with their own physical and symbolic displacements, a…
