Lush aftermath
This article takes up labor and landscape in the wake of war in an unlikely place: an agricultural suburb of Greater Miami. In Homestead, Indigenous Maya migrants displaced during and after scorched earth counterinsurgency work in ornamental plant and palm nurseries, filling U.S. subdivisions and yards with verdant plant life. These flourishing plants produce and stabilize suburban property regimes across the country. Drawing on ethnographic fiel…
The Poisoned Periphery
This essay develops the idea of the "suburban periphery": a place of municipal and imperial dirty work, produced by circulations and dispossessions across scale. Homestead, Florida, a suburb of Miami, is home to a military base, a detention camp for migrant children, agricultural industries, and a nuclear power plant. The essay offers methodological reflections for the study of this socio-spatial formation, paying particular attention to how race…
The drivers of high health and justice costs among a cohort young homeless people in Australia
Our study utilizes Australian survey evidence to estimate the heath and justice costs of a cohort of young homeless people. Health and justice costs for young homeless people are highly skewed with median costs well below mean costs. This is particularly true of justice costs resulting from a relatively high proportion of young homeless people having no interaction with the justice system. Having a diagnosed mental health condition is a primary d…
Cities, Racialized Poverty, and Infrastructures of Possibility
This essay argues that the study of urban poverty is too often characterised by the disappearance of specific people and bodily politics from our analytic frames, rendering modes of life and politics illegible to scholars. We call for attention to the embodied politics of knowledge production, as neighbourhoods surrounding universities are exploited first as laboratories for poverty scholarship—exemplified in the relationship between the Chicago …
Reading Wacquant in Oakland
In ‘Class, ethnicity and state in the making of marginality: Revisiting territories of urban relegation’, Loïc Wacquant argues that the state is central to the production and maintenance of racialised urban marginality. This rejoinder draws upon recent work on territory to extend Wacquant’s relational analysis to the everyday operation of state antipoverty programs. I use an early War on Poverty community development program in Oakland, Californi…
