  • New chronological framework for Zapotec architecture at Las Mesillas, Oaxaca, Mexico

    Open Access•Victoria Castle, Alex E Badillo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2026•References: 54

San Pedro Martir Quiechapa, a municipality in the southern highlands of Oaxaca, preserves evidence of landscape engineering by the ancient Zapotec civilization. At Las Mesillas, the municipality’s largest archaeological site, terraced hillsides and monumental architectural complexes reveal the intensive reshaping of the landscape. Architectural phases show cycles of infilling, resurfacing, and reconfiguration that reflect ritual renewal practices…

  • A Paperless and 3D Workflow for Documenting Excavations at Insula I.14, Pompeii, Italy

    Open Access•Alex E Badillo, Mark C Brennan et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2024•References: 12

In the summer of 2022, Tulane University, in collaboration with archaeologists from other institutions, began excavations at the site of Pompeii. The archaeological work was focused on Insula 14 of Region 1, located in the southeastern sector of the site. To overcome the challenges of recording a complex urban excavation, and of working with a collaborative team, we designed and implemented a unique workflow that combines paperless and 3D data-ca…

  • Ballcourt Representations in Quiechapa, Oaxaca, Mexico

    Open Access•Alex E Badillo•ARTICLE•Ancient Mesoamerica•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 18

During an archaeological survey in the municipality of San Pedro Mártir Quiechapa, Oaxaca, Mexico, archaeologists from the Proyecto Arqueológico de Quiechapa (PAQuie) encountered and documented a number of carved stone elements. Of particular interest are the 30 representations of ballcourts carved into natural rock outcrops at two sites in the region. This is the highest density in which this type of ballcourt representation occurs throughout Me…

  • Monte Albán's Hidden Past

    Open Access•Marc N Levine, Scott W Hammerstedt et al.•ARTICLE•Latin American Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 4•References: 22

In this article, we present the most significant results of the Monte Albán Geophysical Archaeology Project. Using ground-penetrating radar, gradiometry, and electrical resistance, we carried out a systematic survey of the site's Main Plaza to identify buried prehispanic features that might shed light on Monte Albán's early history. The most important discoveries include three buried structures dating between the Danibaan (500-300 BC) and Nisa ph…

  • SfM Photogrammetric Field Methods for Historic Burial Excavations

    Open Access•Alex E Badillo, J Myers et al.•ARTICLE•Advances in Archaeological Practice•2020•Cited by: 6•References: 8

In this article, we present a unique case study in Indianapolis, Indiana, where cultural resource management (CRM) archaeologists, alongside various university archaeologists, tested the use of SfM photogrammetry to effectively replace traditional archaeological methods of mapping and documentation during the excavation of over 500 historic burials. This project was designed with the intention of using SfM photogrammetry for 3D mapping and docume…
