Hola? Counter-expectation and stance in non-canonical uses of a greeting form in Spanish
This article examines the discourse-pragmatic uses of interrogative ¿hola? in contemporary written European Spanish. While hola is conventionally described as a greeting, its interrogative use has received little attention and remains largely undocumented. Drawing on 364 tokens from large web-based corpora, the study shows that ¿hola? is predominantly used as an addressee-oriented, reactive device that targets prior discourse and encodes evaluati…
Constructional borrowing in indirect language contact situations
Borrowing involves the replication of form-meaning associations, including (partially filled) words or phrases, and argument structures that are useful in specific communicative contexts. A large corpus-based analysis of a novel Spanish construction was conducted to demonstrate the borrowability of morphological abstract schemas, even in indirect contact situations. The findings indicate that the English -gate schema has been successfully replica…

Se analizan las redes de tráfico de la Quebrada de Humahuaca en tiempos del "fenómeno Isla", evaluando críticamente el protagonismo atribuido a Tiwanaku en su organización. Con este fin se presentan las investigaciones realizadas en Muyuna -uno de los principales sitios de la época en la Quebrada- ofreciendo información novedosa sobre contextos domésticos y funerarios, economía y modo de vida. Un análisis bayesiano de todas las dataciones disponi…
What may words say, or what may words not say. A corpus-based approach to linguistic action
In this paper I present an empirical approach to the analysis of the way English speakers conceptualize the communicative process in English. Most linguistic expressions about language in English are surface manifestations of what Reddy termed the "conduit metaphor". Reddy's model implies several interrelated cognitive associations: words are conceived as containers in which speakers introduce their ideas and send them to listeners, who will take…
Predicative Complements in English and in Spanish
This paper discusses the use of predicative complements in English and in Spanish. These complements are defined as phrases which identify a semantic quality of the subject or the direct object of the clause. Current predicatives are those expressing a quality previous to the action denoted by the verb, while resulting predicatives denote a quality derived from the verbal process. Broadly speaking, current predicatives appear both in English and …
