  • Citizenship and Surveys: Group Conflict and Nationality-of-Interviewer Effects in Arab Public Opinion Data

    Open Access•Justin J Gengler, Kien T Le et al.•ARTICLE•Political Behavior•2021•Cited by: 5•References: 38

More research than ever before uses public opinion data to investigate society and politics in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Ethnic identities are widely theorized to mediate many of the political attitudes and behaviors that MENA surveys commonly seek to measure, but, to date, no research has systematically investigated how the observable ethnic category(s) of the interviewer may influence participation and answers given in Middle Eas…

  • Proxy reporting in education surveys: Factors influencing accurate reporting in the 2012 Qatar Education Study

Jill Wittrock, Linda Kimmel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Social…•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 7

Proxy reporting is a common practice during survey data collection to increase response rates while reducing fieldwork costs, and agreement between proxies and self-reports is critical to make reliable and valid inferences. This study is the first to unpack what influences proxy accuracy in a non-Western setting using data from the 2012 Qatar Education Study. • The Impact of the Australian Ballot on Member Behavior in the U.S. House of Representatives

    Open Access•Jill Wittrock, Jill N Wittrock et al.•ARTICLE•Political Research Quarterly•2007•Cited by: 10•References: 22

Katz and Sala linked the development of committee property rights in the late-nineteenth-century U.S. House of Representatives to the introduction of the Australian ballot. If, as they posited, members sought personal reputations to carry them to reelection in the new electoral environment, the current article argues that behaviors with more immediate political payoffs also should have changed in ways their theory would predict. The article exami…

  • Presidentialism and the Effect of Electoral Law in Postcommunist Systems: Regime Type Matters

    Open Access•Terry D Clark, Jill Wittrock et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Political Studies•2005•Cited by: 18•References: 26

Efforts to test Duverger’s law in the new democracies of postcommunist Europe have had mixed results. Research argues that mixed systems have an effect on the number of effective parties that is distinct from that of single-mandate district and proportional representation systems. Less attention has been given to the effect of other institutions on the party system, particularly strong presidents. Analyzing election results in postcommunist Europ…
