What happens when, in recording an urban soundscape, the actual recording process is handed over to a city’s people? This article explores the methodological, technological and ideological challenges and opportunities faced in a project based in the small, multicultural and post-industrial city of Limerick, in the Midwest of Ireland. The city is currently undergoing a process of urban ‘regeneration’ following decades of challenges (high unemploym…

Aileen Dillane, Tony Langlois et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Cultural Studies•2015•Cited by: 10

This special section of the Journal of Urban Cultural Studies engages with the idea of activating a 'sonic turn' in urban cultural studies scholarship, in part through the evocation of the paradigm of critical and participatory citizenship, as well as through critical approaches to understanding how sound and music are implicated in the texture of a city. This work is therefore informed by theorizations of topdown and of bottom-up approaches to e…

Technologies for the consumption and production of global media have brought 'foreign bodies' into the domestic spaces of millions of Moroccans.Such unprecedented access to cultural materials is, however, negotiated at a local and familial level, and this paper considers the workings of this domestic interface. It examines the economy of music video production in Morocco and the close links existing between new technologies, traders and their mark…

Although in both Canada and Northern Ireland, such policies are legitimised in discursive terms relating to cultural and political rights, both approaches have primarily arisen as pragmatic responses to competitive notions of nationhood. In both situations, the cultural rights of particular, powerful communities have …

On 29 September 1994, Cheb Hasni, the most renowned Rai singer living in Algeria, was gunned down outside his family's house in Gambetta, a quarter of the city of Waharan (Oran). He was one of many public figures (and some 50,000 others) who have been killed since the main opposition political party, the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) was prevented from assuming power by the annulment of elections that they would have won in 1991. Like the most no…

  • Can you feel it? DJs and House Music culture in the UK

    Open Access•Tony Langlois•ARTICLE•Popular Music•1992•Cited by: 17•References: 3

I spent the summer of 1990 studying the work of disk jockeys involved in the 'House' club scene in London, Manchester and Belfast. What I was initially intrigued by was how a popular music genre could develop such a following, indeed, some notoriety, without the traditional trappings of 'rock 'n' roll' ('star performers', 'groups'), and without a manifest ideological stance adopted in relation to mainstream lifestyles. I came to conclude that a s…
