Practices of Comparing and Conceptual Change in Early Molecular Biology
We consider strategies of drawing comparisons between conceptually different approaches as practiced by scientists in mid-twentieth century molecular biology or biochemistry. The two accounts of spatial complementarity and sequential order used to explain biological processes at the molecular level, and in particular genetic mechanisms are non-commensurable: they share no significant conceptual common ground. This conceptual divide is dealt with …
Wissenschaftsreflexion
Academic freedom and societal respect for science have been decreasing in the past years in the wake of growing nationalism, authoritarianism, and fundamentalism. Even in liberal democracies, science has been attacked by anti-science movements. One of the reasons for the weakening credibility of scientific knowledge is its exaggerated use in framing policy questions. Conflicts about interests and values are transformed into controversies about th…
What Does Good Science-Based Advice to Politics Look Like
I address options for providing scientific policy advice and explore the relation between scientific knowledge and political, economic and moral values. I argue that such nonepistemic values are essential for establishing the significance of questions and the relevance of evidence, while, on the other hand, such social choices are the prerogative of society. This tension can be resolved by recognizing social values and identifying them as separat…

Responsible research and innovation
This Introduction to the Special Issue on “Responsible Research and Innovation” (RRI) outlines features of the philosophical debate about the concepts involved and summarizes the papers assembled in this issue. The topic of RRI is widely discussed in science studies and has made its way into science policy. This SI is intended to make the contributions of philosophers of science more visible. The philosophically relevant parts of the field concer…
Responsible research and innovation
We conducted interviews among some 80 researchers and research executives on their understanding of and their attitudes toward ‘Responsible Research and Innovation’ (RRI). The relevant notion of RRI concerns granting influence on research projects to the general public and stakeholders (‘science with society’), for one, or focusing research on the common good (‘science for society’), for another. We identified a welcoming attitude regarding RRI i…

Historical Epistemology

Scientific Knowledge and Scientific Expertise
The article explores epistemic and social conditions of the trustworthiness of scientific expertise. I claim that there are three kinds of conditions for the trustworthiness of scientific expertise. The first condition is epistemic and means that scientific knowledge enjoys high credibility. The second condition concerns the significance of scientific knowledge. It means that scientific generalizations are relevant for elucidating the particular …

Jospin, Political Cohabitation and Left Governance
The April 21st defeat of Socialist party candidate Lionel Jospin in the first round of the 2002 presidential elections shockingly ended the five-year reign of arguably the most productive government in Fifth Republic France.1 The Jospin government of the Gauche Plurielle departed as surprisingly as it had come to power five years earlier, its legacy of unprecedented success in Left coalition building and far-ranging policy construction seemingly …

Kant's Theory of Matter and His Views on Chemistry
This paper analyzes Kant’s notorious claim that psychology cannot become a science “properly so-called”. Contrary to widespread opinion, he does not hold any of the following three implausible views: (i) psychological phenomena cannot be mathematized, (ii) they cannot be explained in by reference to mathematical causal laws, and (iii) they cannot be dealt with in causal terms at all. Instead of claiming something about psychological phenomena, Ka…
Kant's Mechanical Determination of Matter in the Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science
This paper deals with the interpretation of the Mechanics chapter of Kant’s Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (1786). It is aimed at clarifying the procedure Kant invokes for the transcendental determination of the quantity of matter in mechanical respect. Kant’s intention is to ground mass measurement on the moving force that matter possesses by virtue of its motion, and that moving bodies display by setting other bodies in motion. An …

Constructing or Completing Physical Geometry? On the Relation between Theory and Evidence in Accounts of Space-Time Structure
The aim of this paper is to discuss the relation between the observation basis and the theoretical principles of General Relativity. More specifically, this relation is analyzed with respect to constructive axiomatizations of the observation basis of space-time theories, on the one hand, and in attempts to complete them, on the other. The two approaches exclude one another so that a choice between them is necessary. I argue that the completeness …

Using Graded Readers
Graded readers have been around for some time but very often, unfortunately, they have been the poor relation in the family of English teaching aids, fitted into the lesson ‘faute de mieux’. At their worst, they are regarded as poor substitutes for real literature and at their best as gap fillers. Much of this criticism has often been the result of the content and presentation of the readers themselves, since many consist of stories and subjects …
