Spaces of Desire
This essay explores the relation between space—real and imaginary— and consumerist desire. Any process of modernization implies, on the one hand, social and geographical mobility that makes it possible for the individual to opt to change his or her condition and, on the other hand, a growing transparency of the world, where life of faraway people fascinates and attracts. Such a spatial disposition, where the object of desire always slips away int…

Hegemony of the global‐popular? (Or cultural studies as an accomplice?)
The title is supposed to be a paradox, as the two notions are opposed in Gramsci’s work: hegemony being the heterogeneous aspect of the dominating alliance in a given historical period (e.g. fascism), whereas the national‐popular representing the unified cultural resistance from below. The question mark thus refers to a short circuit of opposites, to an unexpected consequence of liberation itself, rather than to the domination of some new cultura…
Metamorphoses of Territory
This paper, based on field research in Bulgaria, presents the reshaping of the national territory under the influence of the application for EU accession. The traditional North–South coordinates of modern/oriental are turned upside down and what used to be seen as the backward part of the country is now the vanguard of liberal, trade-centred capitalism. The century long battle between the national centre and the countryside has been fuelled by Eu…
Communist urbanization and conditional citizenship
In this essay, Ivaylo Ditchev plays with the theory and reality of the Eastern European utopian project of the communist period, tracing their effort to create an urban form that erased the spatial contradictions of human settlements, and promote a way of living in line with socialistic values. From the theory, Ditchev uncovers two competing visions for the ideal socialist territoriality, based on either an ameliorated form of concentration or a …
