  • Planning in context: Empirical challenges versus normative instruments in large Brazilian cities

Open Access•Camila Carvalho, C A de Carvalho et al.•ARTICLE•urbe Revista Brasileira de Gestão…•2025

Large Brazilian cities have historically faced extraordinary challenges, such as enormous housing deficits, exhausted infrastructures, fragmented spatial structures with acute mobility issues, and public security concerns. At the same time, many normative tools have been progressively created to address at least some of these challenges. This work confronts two such worlds: the empirical world of functional and material problems found in large Br…

  • The Hidden Connections of Urban Crime: A Network Analysis of Victims, Crime Types, and Locations in Rio de Janeiro

    Open Access•Fernanda Careta Ventorim, Vinicius M Netto•ARTICLE•Urban Science•2024•References: 4

Urban crime is a pressing issue in socially unequal regions like Brazil. We investigate the complex relationships between crime, victims, and urban situations in Rio de Janeiro. We analyze the connections between specific types of crime, victim characteristics, and crime locations through complex network analysis. In a large-scale empirical study, we examine 5000 randomly selected crime incidents in Rio between 2007 and 2018. Our analysis reveals…

  • From urban form to information: Cellular configurations in different spatial cultures

    Open Access•Vinicius M Netto, Edgardo Brigatti et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2023

Cities are different worldwide, but does this fact have any relation to culture? The idea that urban form embodies idiosyncrasies related to cultural identities captures the imagination of many in urban studies, but it is an assumption yet to be carefully examined. At its heart, the question of whether cities can be seen as cultural artefacts is informational: whether or not cultural traces can be encoded in the physical configuration of cities. …

  • Mapping the conceptual system of an urban theory and its evolution: A text analysis of space syntax conference papers over 20 years

Kimon Krenz, Sophia Psarra et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Morphology•2023•Cited by: 1

This work presents a new methodology for analysing the conceptual system of a scientific theory over time. Through the application of a quantitative text analysis to a large corpus of conference proceedings from 1997 to 2017, this study offers insight into the development and relationships of concepts within the domain of space syntax as a representative field within urban morphology. The evolution of this specific field is tracked for the first …

  • Cidade e interação: O Papel Do Espaço Urbano Na Organização Social

Examinando as condições …

  • Social Interaction and the City: The Effect of Space on the Reduction of Entropy

Vinicius M Netto, João Meirelles et al.•PREPRINT•2017

How can individual acts amount to coherent systems of interaction? In this paper, we attempt to answer this key question by suggesting that there is a place for cities in the way we coordinate seemingly chaotic decisions. We look into the elementary processes of social interaction exploring a particular concept, “social entropy,” or how social systems deal with uncertainty and unpredictability in the transition from individual actions to systems …

  • The social fabric of cities’: A tripartite approach to cities as systems of interaction

    Vinicius M Netto•ARTICLE•Area Development and Policy•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 17

This paper introduces the main ideas of an integrated approach intended to address three vital yet relatively little explored dimensions in the social and material shaping of cities. First, it looks into ‘cities as systems of encounters’ in time and space – or how we find ourselves co-present with those like us or those different from us in public and private places. Second, it introduces a view to ‘cities as systems of communication’ – or how ci…

  • Segregated Networks in the City

Open Access•Vinicius M Netto, Maíra Pinheiro Soares et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Urban…•2015•Cited by: 7•References: 49

Segregation has been one of the most persistent features of urban life and, accordingly, one of the main subjects of enquiry in urban studies. Stemming from a tradition that can be traced back to the Chicago School in the early twentieth century, social segregation has been seen as the natural consequence of the social division of space. Such naturalized understanding of segregation as 'territorial segregation' takes space as a surrogate for soci…

    Open Access•Vinicius M Netto•ARTICLE•EURE (Santiago•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Few notions aspire to reach the condition of urban life and experience as that of "urbanity" -and perhaps no one has done so more imprecisely.Departing om usual focus on the spatial conditions of urbanity, the paper brings a potentially esher approach which draws om disciplines still largely unrelated: philosophy and urban studies.A series of concepts of urbanity unfold as we explore the experiential, communicative and ontological conditions of u…

  • Practice, Space, and the Duality of Meaning

    Open Access•Vinicius M Netto, Vinicius Netto•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning D…•2008•Cited by: 11•References: 16

The paper aims at a rewriting of the concept of meaning as a connection between the social and the material, a multiple connection, perhaps the only possible intrinsic connection between things as different as 'practice' and 'space', and a major condition of what has been recently addressed as 'inherent relatedness'. Drawing mainly on Niklas Luhmann's theory of self-referentiality, I propose a reinterpretation of relatedness as a property of mean…
