A Geography of Gender Relations
Stuyck K., Luyten S., Kesteloot C., Meert H. and Peleman K. A geography of gender relations: role patterns in the context of different regional industrial development, Regional Studies. Feminist geographers state that gender relations produce spatial structures and that, in turn, these structures help to maintain these relations. In order to explore this idea, the paper considers the household role pattern of women in two different economic regio…
The importance of the institutional environment on multifunctional farming systems in the peri-urban area of Brussels
Between Rural and Urban Slums
In this paper we deal with the geography of pathways through homelessness, developed by households who live in holiday parks in the rural southern part of Belgium (Wallonia). The paper aims to provide insights into the motivations and objectives of the homeless themselves and to identify structural obstacles that risk reproducing homelessness. After a conceptual introduction, we present our research methodology, which combines quantitative and qu…
Space, experience and authority
This paper reports on ongoing research on attitudes towards the establishing of refugee centers in Belgium. Attitudes are here defined ethnographically as discursive and active constructs and processes often captured under statified terms such as “attitude” or “opinion”. Based on an analysis of preliminary findings from one town, Beersel, a number of insights into the connection between space and the structure, quality and distribution of such at…
Rural Community Life and the Importance of Reciprocal Survival Strategies
Although Belgian poverty is mainly concentrated in urban regions, the profound restructuring of labour and food markets, the dismantling of the welfare state and the growth of new types of households are also producing poverty and social exclusion in rural areas. This paper stresses that not every deprived rural household should be regarded as excluded from society. By developing survival strategies, households attempt to escape from social margi…
Informal Spaces
This paper unravels the relations between different categories of the informal economy and their spatial distribution in the geographical setting of Brussels. Micro perspectives (households as economic agents) and macro perspectives (the informal economy related to economic recession) are combined in order to deal with categories of informal activities which are homogenous in terms of their spatial logic. In the first part we review several class…
The Geography of Survival
The rise of poverty in Western societies can be explained by three socio‐economic processes: the dualisation and polarisation of the labour market, the dismantling of the welfare state, and the increase of new types of households like single parents and singles. These processes are interrelated and they lead towards different mechanisms of social exclusion. This article stresses that not everyone excluded from the labour market, welfare provision…
Polarisation socio-spatiale et stratégies de survie dans deux quartiers bruxellois
Socio-Spatial Polarisation and Survival Strategies in two Brussels' Neighbourhoods. Socio-spatial polarisation in the Brussels urban region can be dealt with at three levels at which different spatial processes are operating. The first level operates to distinguish the city from its periphery and results from the economic growth and suburbanisation of the 1960s. The second level of polarisation occurs within Brussels itself and relates to mechani…
