Unveiling How Floods Marginalize Women
This study examines how recurrent coastal flooding reshapes gendered vulnerabilities and capabilities in two communities in Pekalongan City, Indonesia. Drawing on in‐depth interviews, focus‐group discussions, and observations, the analysis applies an integrated framework of vulnerabilities and capabilities to investigate changes in livelihoods, domestic roles, mobility, and access to resources. Rather than treating women as uniformly more vulnera…

Beyond University Planning Studio Courses
This article analyses a fieldtrip studio course in Indonesia, reflecting on its value and benefits for urban planning. The original contribution of the article is twofold. First, we show how the course contributes to the development of the skills and knowledge required by planning graduates. Second, in relation to the course’s learning activities, we reflect on the significance and challenges involved in building partnerships between academia and…
The politics of gendered space
Labor markets are still heavily gendered everywhere, even when women's participation in the labor market is greater now than at any other time in history. Existing research shows poor women's participation in the informal economy is higher than men's in many parts of the Global South. However, this is not the case in Bangladesh. Poor Muslim women's participation, particularly where they require access to public space, is lower than men due to per…
Understanding Indonesia’s gated communities and their relationship with inequality
Income inequality continues to increase worldwide and is highly visible in cities. This rising income inequality, along with the growing upper-middle class, has accelerated the development of gated communities (GC) as a desired housing for the ‘successful’ groups and a manifestation of how the city reproduces inequality. We analyze GC development in Jakarta and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, and offer a typology for this housing option in that country wh…
Informal Settlers
The nature and scope of “informal settlers” are defined according to specific historical conditions, social conflicts, and spatial configurations. In contrast with the prevailing negative features of slums, other types of informal dwelling are here distinguished and a more nuanced account of informal living given. This approach has consequences for the study of land tenure in terms of its diversity, security, and possible formalization. It is arg…
Urban poverty alleviation strategies in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
A multidimensional understanding of poverty includes the access of poor groups to decision‐making processes based on their needs and aspirations. However, the realisation of this ‘right to make decisions’ faces multiple obstacles. Over the last 20 years in Indonesia, in a context of a more democratic political environment and policy decentralisation, poverty alleviation policies have followed institutional arrangements to provide communities with…

Urbanizaciones cerradas a escala planetaria
The suburban question
Manuel Castells spoke of the urban as a unit of collective consumption, yet much of the politics of collective consumption he documented was evident in the suburbs. The tendency for suburbs of most complexions to lack services and amenities has been and continues to be a focus of politics in Europe. In Spain, as elsewhere in Europe, a grassroots politics surrounding the making good of these deficits in basic services and amenities has broadened a…
Close but Divided
With their walls, fences and barriers, gated communities, which have proliferated over the last three decades, are now a familiar element of the urban landscape worldwide. It can be argued, however, that certain negative social consequences have attended their expansion, in particular “social segregation” between gated communities and non-gated neighbouring communities. To what extent do gated communities exacerbate social differences by inhibiti…
Do Gates Negate the City? Gated Communities’ Contribution to the Urbanisation of Suburbia in Pilar, Argentina
Pilar is a city located in the third ring of the Buenos Aires metropolitan region (Argentina). Over the past 30 years, the widespread development of gated residential communities has seemingly gone hand-in-hand with an urbanisation of this outer suburb signalled by the arrival of new populations, enterprise, retail and other services. The growth of the ‘private city’ of these gated communities therefore has important implications for the ‘public …
Who Segregates Whom? The Analysis of a Gated Community in Mendoza, Argentina
Gated communities represent an urban phenomenon that is spreading all over the world. This paper presents evidence of what the literature says about the link between gated communities and urban social segregation, showing that the development of gated communities contributes to segregationist tendencies in the city. It suggests the use of structuration theory as a theoretical framework to study the link between gated communities and segregation. …
