Voiceless nasal consonants are typologically rare in the world’s languages. The present study investigates the acoustic realization of reported voiceless nasals in the Miyako Ryukyuan dialect Ikema. Voiceless nasals in Ikema occur word-initially and word-medially as part of a geminate or consonant cluster, and are phonemically distinct from modal voiced nasals. • The Inheritance of Empire and the Ruins of Rome in French Colonial Algeria

    C Ford•ARTICLE•Past & Present•2015•Cited by: 4

In 1912 Albert Ballu, chief architect of the Service des Monuments Historiques de L’Algérie, described the ‘triple task’ of the Service, which had been established in 1880—fifty years after the beginning of France’s conquest of Algeria—as that of not only excavating the ‘secrets’ that the ground contained, but also of ‘making them presentable to the public’ and of ‘preserving them from destruction.’ 1 France was not alone in embarking on this arc…

  • Brittany, 1750-1950

    C Ford•ARTICLE•The English Historical Review•2009

The region of Brittany has occupied a unique space in the French historical imagination. This wide-ranging book seeks both to capture the complex and changing ways in which the region has been represented while, at the same time, exploring how the region forged its own identity over a two-hundred-year period. It begins with the premiss that Bretons have developed a distinctive form of social and cultural identity, which is based on two failures: …

  • Reducing obesity and related chronic disease risk in children and youth

    Open Access•Mary Flynn, M A T Flynn et al.•ARTICLE•Obesity Reviews•2006

Childhood obesity is a global epidemic and rising trends in overweight and obesity are apparent in both developed and developing countries. Available estimates for the period between the 1980s and 1990s show the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children increased by a magnitude of two to five times in developed countries (e.g. from 11% to over 30% in boys in Canada), and up to almost four times in developing countries (e.g. from 4% to 14% …

  • Piracy or Policy

    Open Access•C Ford, C J Ford•ARTICLE•Transactions of the Royal…•1979•References: 1

The opening years of the fifteenth century witnessed an outburst of lawlessness at sea of such intensity that legitimate commerce between the kingdoms of France and England, and their allies, all but ceased. Official contemporary sources seem to leave no doubt as to the causes of this outburst. The truce conservators of the two kingdoms were in full agreement in placing the blame for the outrages against merchant shipping on the activities of ‘pi…
