  • Exploring a diachronic (re)cycle of roles

Chiara Fedriani, Michèle Prandi•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2014

In this paper we explore the struggle between the use of the Dative case and the competing strategy featuring the preposition ad ‘to’ and the Accusative from Latin to Early Romance. Unlike the Dative, the prepositional strategy is semantically transparent, since ad ‘to’ has a clear allative meaning. We first consider the diachronic development of the roles involved in the Dative-marked complex within a chronological span ranging from Plautus to t…

  • A Plea for Living Metaphors

    Michèle Prandi•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•2012

Now that the cognitive turn has highlighted the role of consistent and shared metaphorical concepts in human cognition and language, a comprehensive vision demands that living metaphors are paid due attention. The most typical and revealing instances of living metaphor are not poetic rewordings of shared and consistent metaphorical concepts but textual interpretations of conflictual meanings of complex expressions. Conflictual metaphors document …

  • The building blocks of meaning

Michèle Prandi•BOOK•The building blocks of meaning•2004

The shaping of complex meanings depends on punctual and relational coding and inferencing. Coding is viewed as a vector which can run either from expression to content or from concepts to (linguistic) forms to mark independent conceptual relations. While coding relies on systematic resources internal to language, inferencing essentially depends on a layered system of autonomous shared conceptual structures, which include both cognitive models and…

  • Contraintes conceptuelles sur la distribution

    Michèle Prandi•ARTICLE•Langages•1998•Cited by: 2

This paper aims at clarifying some implications connected with the work about object classes and relevant for conceptual analysis. The first part contains some remarks about the interactions between formal syntactic constraints and conceptual restrictions in connection with words distribution. The second part tries to draw some relevant distinctions within the realm of conceptual restrictions. On the basis of explicit criteria, a distinction will…
