  • Dialogical strategies in replies to offensive humour

Carla Canestrari, Alexandre Viana et al.•ARTICLE•Language and Dialogue•2019

The aim of this paper is to determine whether humour can be used as a discursive strategy to reply to offensive humour about natural disasters and what purpose it serves. A corpus of 431 replies to the Charlie Hebdo cartoons concerning the earthquake in central Italy in August 2016 was analysed. Depending on the target of the humour in these replies, they were used to agree, disagree or deflect away from the offensive and aggressive content of th…

  • Humour and laughter as vestiges of evolution

    Open Access•Alexandre Viana•ARTICLE•European Journal of Humour Research•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 11

This paper argues in favour of considering humour and laughter as embodied signs of the ancient, sympathetic, figurative mode of the human mind, still working with us in dance, music, singing and literary activity. Starting from steady evolutionary provisos, both the continuity and the departing lines between nonhuman vocalisations and human laughter are considered. Along the Duchenne and non-Duchenne expression types, we analyse the developmenta…

  • The Swedish model

Open Access•Alexandre Viana, Alexandre Guedes Viana et al.•ARTICLE•Brazilian Journal of Political…•2016•References: 4

This paper describes the main details of the Swedish economic model, which began to be structured on the 1930s and achieved its consolidation on the 1950s. The Swedish model is characterized by a macroeconomic policy which provides price stability, fiscal results for selective industrial policies and social active policies, the latter being recognized as a wide universal welfare state. This combination, which contradicts the traditional economic …

Apresentaremos, agora, os dados que …

  • Asymmetry in script opposition

    Alexandre Viana, Amadeu Viana•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2010•Cited by: 3•References: 3

This article examines the relationship between targets and script distribution in humour, starting from some basic notions of GTVH. Script asymmetry, considered here as a property of Script Opposition, is defined in terms of a perceptual difference between scripts, which matches a fairly common distribution: a Foreground Script against a Background Script. Throughout this paper, the attributes of this script distribution are explored in verbal jo…
