Rethinking ageing in place from a human rights perspective: Insights from international experts
Czech women’s motivations for and lived experiences with anti-ageing cosmetic/aesthetic surgery journey
Little qualitative literature has focused on women's motivations to undergo cosmetic/aesthetic surgery and their lived experiences throughout the surgery process (e.g., before, during, and after). To fill this gap, we interviewed 15 Czech women aged 30-55 and conducted non-participatory observations at aesthetic surgery clinics. We conducted a thematic analysis from which we generated three overarching themes. Broadly, participants discussed the …
Using the knife to build the trust? The role of trust in the decision-making process of aesthetic surgeons and women patients/clients
Trust is a fundamental element in decision-making processes. In medicine, trust also helps to build relationships between patients/clients and doctors (aesthetic surgeons) and will influence a woman's decision to undergo aesthetic/cosmetic surgery. Patients/clients, as well as aesthetic surgeons, use different ways to build trust. Our analyses are based on fifteen qualitative interviews with aesthetic surgeons, fifteen qualitative interviews with…

Materiality, Corporeality, and Relationality in Older Human–Robot Interaction (Ohri)
This article presents interdisciplinary research on the social and technological aspects of interactions between older adults and the humanoid robot Pepper (SoftBank Robotics). Our case study is based on the regular meetings that are a part of an experimental intervention taking place at the Active Ageing Centre for older adults in Prague, run by the NGO Life 90. Through the methods of participant observation, unstructured interviews, analyses of…

The growing numbers and proportions of older people among European populations has increased the need to obtain more reliable data on their needs, v…
New Roles for Older People
The Meaning and Performance of the Grandparenting Role among Young Old Czechs
In the discourse of active ageing it is assumed that young seniors will hold active roles in public and private life. This article examines grandparenting as an emerging role of young olds in the context of their heterogeneous role sets. Based on an integrated analysis of a survey conducted among people aged 50-70 and qualitative interviews it describes what roles Czech young olds hold and how they position and frame the grandparenting role among…
Activities of Seniors in Large Towns: Health, Space and Subjective Quality of Life
The article presents an analysis of selected activities engaged in by seniors in the central areas of large Czech towns. The authors set out from the assumption that activities are a factor that animate the physical environment and, together with the actual quality of the physical environment, importantly contribute to the quality of life of seniors. The authors illustrate this on the basis of a sample survey conducted among seniors over the age …
Active ageing policies in the Czech Republic and Poland
This article deals with active ageing as a policy concept and its meanings in different cultures. We describe the Czech Republic and Poland, formerly communist states that experienced economic and political transitions in the 1990s and joined the European Union in 2004. Both countries are demographically similar, with ageing populations, but their understanding of active ageing as a policy issue are quite different. The methodology used was a met…
