  • Formal Trade and the Informal Economy: Evidence From Gatt / WTO Membership

    Open Access•Nguyen Doan•ARTICLE•World Economy•2026

In recent decades, an increasing number of countries have joined international trade agreements such as the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and its successor, the World Trade Organization (WTO). However, the effects of trade liberalisation on labour markets and economic transformation remain debated. This paper investigates the influence of WTO accession on the size of the shadow economy across countries. A panel dataset of 153 coun…

  • Environmental taxes and the economy: New evidence of the shadow economy

Open Access•Canh Phuc Nguyen, Nguyen Doan et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Public and Cooperative…•2026•References: 4

This study examines the influence of environmental taxes on the shadow economy for a global sample of 61 countries in two subsamples (high‐income group—HIG and low‐ and middle‐income group—LMG) with data available from 2002 to 2018. Environmental taxes are found to increase the shadow economy significantly across the globe and two subsamples. The proportion of the shadow economy of GDP rises by about 0.201 percentage points on average when the en…

  • What Is the Unexpected Impact of Mandatory Gender-Equal Pay for Work of Equal Value on the Shadow Economy

Open Access•Nguyen Doan, Canh Phuc Nguyen et al.•ARTICLE•International Social Science…•2025•References: 65

Laws mandating non-discrimination on the basis of gender (e.g., gender-equal pay for work of equal value) are expected to empower women, especially in employment, to achieve gender equality. We use data from 162 countries from 1995 to 2018 to provide new evidence that this law might have unexpected effects. We find that laws mandating gender-equal pay for work of equal value appear to reduce the size of the shadow economy. On average, the shadow …

  • A Comprehensive Measure of Lifeyears Lost due to Covid‐19 in 2020: A Comparison across Countries and with Past Disasters

    Open Access•Nguyen Doan, Ilan Noy•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2021

Typically, disaster damages are measured separately in four dimensions: fatalities, injuries, dislocations, and the financial damage that they wreak. Noy (2016) developed a lifeyears index of disaster damage which aggregates these disparate measures. Here, we use this lifeyears index to assess the costs of the COVID‐19 pandemic across countries and compare these costs to the average annual costs of all other disasters that have occurred in all co…

  • Measuring the Economic Risk of Covid‐19

Open Access•Ilan Noy, Nguyen Doan et al.•ARTICLE•Global Policy•2020

We measure the economic risk of COVID‐19 at a geo‐spatially detailed resolution. In addition to data about the current prevalence of confirmed cases, we use data from 2014–2018 and a conceptual disaster risk model to compute measures for exposure, vulnerability, and resilience of the local economy to the shock of the epidemic. Using a battery of proxies for these four concepts, we calculate the hazard, the principal components of exposure and vul…
