Moffett and Rhetoric
This examination of Moffett's contribution to a theory of school English concentrates on his understanding of rhetoric. It is suggested that the impetus for Teaching the Universe of Discourse is dialectical: he was running against currents in English teaching at the time that were literary and technical, as well as the specific practices of sentence combining and embedding. His introduction of rhetoric into debates about school English was a key …

Introduction to E-learning Research
This chapter is the Introduction to the Sage Handbook of E-Learning Research (2007), edited by Richard Andrews and Caroline Haythornthwaite. Theories and models of and for online learning
For many years, discussion of online learning, or e-learning, has been pre-occupied with the practice of teaching online and the debate about whether being online is 'as good as' being offline. The authors contributing to this paper see this past as an incubation period for the emergence of new teaching and learning practices. We see changes in teaching and learning emerging from the nexus of a changing landscape of information and communication …
How — and Why — Does One Print Scenarios? Flaminio Scala, 1611
Flaminio Scala's Teatro delle Favole Rappresentative (1611) are the only commedia dell'arte scenarios offered in their own time to a reading public. An examination of the original printed text throws up some insights, which have not previously been noted, about the thought processes which went into the preparation of the volume. Internal evidence in fact suggests that the scenarios were quite carefully presented and adapted for print. Scholars ha…
The effect of grammar teaching on writing development
This article reports on the results of two international systematic research reviews which focus on different aspects of teaching grammar to improve the quality and accuracy of 5–16‐year‐olds' writing in English. The results show that there is little evidence to indicate that the teaching of formal grammar is effective; and that teaching sentence‐combining has a more positive effect. In both cases, however, despite over a hundred years of researc…

Third-Party Information Providers and Innovative Environmental Technology Adoption
This article explores the role of third-party information providers in assisting regulated facilities with environmental compliance technology choices. A key contribution is the finding that regulated facilities that rely more heavily on environmental consultants than in-house information sources choose conventional compliance options more frequently than facilities relying primarily on in-house information. Consultants also perceive environmenta…

Procedural and Substantive Fairness in Risk Decisions
The issue of fairness often is central within environmental policy debates. The recent proliferation of state and local comparative risk projects for informing the selection of environmental policy priorities offers an appropriate setting to explore the issue of procedural fairness in risk‐based decisionmaking. A Note on the Text of Antonio Da Tempo's Summa Artis Rithmici Vulgaris Dictaminis
The SUMMA ARTIS RITHMICI VULGARIS DICTAMINIS was composed in 1332 by Antonio da Tempo, Paduan judge and amateur versifier. Compared with the earlier and more familiar De Vulgari Eloquentia it is a pedestrian and plodding work, illustrated with compositions by Antonio himself which have to be approached with some charitable restraint. None the less, it retains a certain importance and even primacy among treatises on Italian versification, because …

Maternal vocal stimulation was contingent upon infant vocalization for experimental conditions of one session and was p…

Values Analysis in Environmental Policy
The consideration of values in environmental policy decisions requires attention not only to substantive matters of environmental quality, but also to balancing such broader social values as science, democracy and authority. Current methods for values analysis can be grouped according to their relative emphasis among these values in order to better illuminate the implications of adopting such methods

Gli Ingannati as a Text for Performance
The anonymous comedy GLI INGANNATI, performed in Sienaby the Accademia degli Intronati on the last day of Carnival in 1532, has been the object of much critical and historical attention in recent years, commensurate with the popularity and interest which the play aroused in the sixteenth century. The question of its authorship has been reopened in a striking manner by Giovanni Aquilecchia, who suggests a collaboration between Francesco Maria Molz…
