  • Music and Dance in the Ancien Régime

Lawrence M Zbikowski, Lawrence Zbikowski et al.•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Topic Theory•2014•References: 1

This chapter explores the contribution French noble dance made to the topical universe available to composers in the latter half of the eighteenth century. The chapter reviews the culture of dance in the ancien régime and offers a detailed analysis of the relationship between music and dance in a bourrée; the choreography for this bourrée was preserved in dance notation and published in 1700. I am gratified by Brian Robison's response to my essay, not the least because his references are drawn exclusively from the end of the alphabet, a place dear to my heart.I also value Brian's close and sensitive reading of the essay, and his extension of some of its informal formalizations through further formalization and fuzzification.Readers familiar with the SMT list will remember the considerable amount of interest in fuzzy set theory express…

  • Theories of Categorization and Theories of Music

    Open Access•Lawrence M Zbikowski, Lawrence Zbikowski•ARTICLE•Music Theory Online•1995•References: 11

Processes of categorization are known to be fundamental to human cognitive processing. This essay reviews the characteristics of two types of categories that give rise to conceptual representations. One type, which has been demonstrated to have a graded structure, is then used to model dynamic processes for thematic materials in the first movement of Bruckner's Sixth Symphony
