Yuri Kholopov and Twelve-Toneness
Twelve-tone composition and theory experienced a belated start in the Soviet Union. Composers and theorists of the 1960s-80s, suddenly able to engage with twelve-tone technique, found themselves constructing a notion of a practice that had been initiated long in the past. Prokofiev’s Symphony no. 2, Yuri Kholopov, and the Theory of Twelve-Tone Chords
A small collection of works, including Prokofiev’s Symphony no. 2 (1924), include chords with all twelve pitch classes. Yuri Kholopov, the foremost late-Soviet theorist, considered twelve-tone chords a branch of twelve-tone technique. Taking Prokofiev and Kholopov as a starting point, and building on prior scholarship by Martina Homma, I assemble a history and theory of twelve-tone chords. The central theoretical problem is that of differentiatio…
Sergei Taneev's Vertical-Shifting Counterpoint
In his 1909 treatisePodvizhnoi kontrapunkt strogogo pis'ma(Movable counterpoint in the strict style), Sergei Taneev reconceived invertible counterpoint as a type of "vertical-shifting" counterpoint, in which the voices move higher or lower in pitch but do not necessarily cross. The conditions on vertical shifting at all intervals operate according to the same mathematical principles; Taneev's system allows these conditions to be efficiently calcu…
