Is It Possible to Sing the Prologue to Orlando di Lasso’s Prophetiae Sibyllarum in Tune
Mapping the Geometries of Pitch-Class Set Similarity Measures via Multidimensional Scaling
A numerical visualization technique called multidimensional scaling (MDS) was applied to the matrices of (dis)similarity ratings from six pitch-class set (pcset) similarity functions to see what types of constructs they actually measure. Three functions that use the interval-class vector (icv) for their computations (Scott and Isaacson’s ANGLE, Isaacson’s IcVSIM and ISIM2) and three that use subset imbedding (Castrén’s RECREL, Rahn’s ATMEMB and A…
Interval-Classes and Psychological Space
Multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis was applied to data on interval similarity (confusability) obtained in a study to help improve aural skills pedagogy. A three-dimensional geometric configuration was derived, indicating an interaction of interval size, interval-type, and class of acoustical dissonance (perfect vs. imperfect consonances vs. dissonances). The "classical" ordering of interval-classes from pitch-class set theory can be derived …
