  • Coauthorship, Social Structure and Influence Within Specialties

    Open Access•T D Stokes, Terry Stokes et al.•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1989•Cited by: 13•References: 1

Citation and co-citation of research articles can be used to produce bibliometric maps of the intellectual, but not necessarily the social, influences within scientific specialties. In the common situation where papers have multiple authors, author order is not a reliable guide to influence. By examining patterns of coauthorship, however, we are able to identify the significant figures within two sample specialties, and to show that the specialti…

  • Reason in the Zeitgeist

    Open Access•T D Stokes, Terry Stokes•ARTICLE•History of Science•1986•References: 10

The pages of the history of science record thousands of instances of similar discoveries having been made by scientists working independently of one another. Sometimes the discoveries are simultaneous or almost so; sometimes a scientist will make anew a discovery which, unknown to him, somebody else had made years before

  • The Double Helix and the Warped Zipper — An Exemplary Tale

    Open Access•T D Stokes, Terry Stokes•ARTICLE•Social Studies of Science•1982•Cited by: 5

Watson and Crick's celebrated double helix is a model problem-solution in the study of the conformation of biological macromolecules. It is, in Kuhn's terms, an `exemplar' for that `disciplinary matrix'. In 1976, however, two groups independently suggested essentially the same alternative, non-helical structure for DNA. No disciplinary `crisis' of confidence in the double-helical model preceded this proposal and, although Kuhn allows for such occ…
