  • Global History Wars

Open Access•Máté Rigó, José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2026

In recent years, there has been a skyrocketing success of global histories of states and regions that have not been the traditional foci of global history. Since 2017, a series of volumes has appeared on the global history of Sicily, Catalonia, Spain, Portugal and Hungary, among others. In this article, we offer some cautionary tales and challenges; we explore emerging directions in the field, as well as its potential limitations, and advocate fo…

  • The Doctors and the Party

    Open Access•José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•Central European History•2025

This article analyzes the interplay between medicine and politics in East Germany. It analyzes the meetings of the Politburo medical commissions (1958–60) to frame and define the habitus of a generation, the “Tenners” (born 1910–20), which included most of the experts in the Politburo meetings. This generation consisted of politically committed doctors who were also influential medical scholars, many with international reputations. The Politburo …

  • Living the Global Tourism Boom “from Below”

Open Access•José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•Journal of Social History•2025

This article analyzes the social effects of mass global tourism on Spaniards. Since the 1950s, and especially in the 1960s, the Franco regime promoted tourism policies that allowed the massive arrival of foreigners to Spain. At the same time, the regime’s propaganda conveyed that Spaniards, too, were part of this new situation of modern tourism. Scholarship has often treated tourism as an asset for breaking the hold of authoritarianism. Tourism s…

  • School maturity and the quest for normalcy

Open Access•Annina Gagyiova, José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•The History of the Family•2024•References: 7

After World War II, socialist states developed a new schooling system aimed at building an egalitarian society. While there is a solid body of research discussing the relationship between the intent and effect of the egalitarian design of socialist school systems, the importance of school maturity assessments for the socialist project has received only minor attention. This article discusses how the introduction of school maturity assessments dev…

  • Turning points in socialist medicine

Open Access•Kateřina Lišková, Natalia Jarska et al.•ARTICLE•Continuity and Change•2024

Socialist states aspired to create modern, egalitarian societies with healthy citizens. Over the four decades of state socialism, experts debated whether premature children could achieve normal long-term mental development and full societal integration. This article analyses expertise networks to comparatively explore medical discussions regarding premature infants’ long-term development in Hungary, Poland, East Germany and Czechoslovakia. We exa…

  • Saving newborns, defining livebirth

Open Access•Kateřina Lišková, Natalia Jarska et al.•ARTICLE•History of Science•2024

After World War II, infant mortality rates started dropping steeply. We show how this was accomplished in socialist countries in East-Central Europe. Focusing on the two postwar decades, we explore comparatively how medical experts in Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, and East Germany saved fragile newborns. Based on an analysis of medical journals, we argue that the Soviet Union and its medical practices had only a marginal influence; the four co…

  • How Transnational Exchanges Shaped Conceptions about Morality and Small Nations in Europe

    Open Access•José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•Contemporary European History•2023•References: 4

This paper deals with appraisals of Havel made in Spain in the 1990s. During this decade, the Czech politician's popularity reached a peak in Europe, and Spanish politicians approached his vision of morality in politics in different ways, taking advantage of it to support different political and national projects. In the first half of the decade, interpretations of Havel were especially productive in Catalonia, where two almost antagonistic polit…

  • Vacaciones socialistas».

  • The Black Sea Is Our Mallorca’

    Open Access•José Luis Aguilar López-Barajas•ARTICLE•German History•2022

This article analyses the construction of the East German holiday experience in the 1960s and 1970s, when tourism became a mass phenomenon on both sides of the Iron Curtain. First, it discusses the role played by the West in shaping the expectations of GDR tourists. Mallorca was the ultimate, but not sole, destination, that influenced how East Germans imagined tourism abroad. Secondly, the article tackles how expectations compared with actual exp…
