Investigating the origins of the Cherniakhiv community at Voitenki, East Ukraine, through strontium isotope analysis
This paper presents strontium isotope data of human burials from Voitenki, a cemetery attributed to the Cherniakhiv Culture (1 st Millennium AD), in East Ukraine. Intending to use strontium isotope analysis to distinguish between local and non-local origins, we sampled 30 out of 113 inhumation graves that were excavated until 2018. The sample set included 22 adults, 4 juvenile individuals and 4 children, among them 11 anthropologically identified…
Unique Brooches of the Bügelknopffibeln Group at the Burial Ground of the Late Roman Period Voitenki
The uniqueness of the Knop Bow Fibula (Bügelknopffibeln) from burial 114 lies in the presence of a short, trapezoidal stem and very large buttons (knobs) on the head and ends of the spring and broche from burial 183 and the cult layer of the burial ground is seen in the presence of a plate-"axes" at the transition point of the back to the head and a pentagonal plate on the stem. In the area of the Chernyakhov/Ŝantana de Mureş culture Bügelknopffi…
Non-destructive analyses of copper alloys and silver items from Voitenki. The recycling of metal in Cherniakhov culture
Brooches, belt buckles and other metal objects with a specific design are considered characteristic of Cherniakhov culture. In contrast with well-known typologies, the metal composition of these objects has rarely been investigated. Forty-four artefacts from the settlement and cemetery at Voitenki (east Ukraine) were chosen for metal analysis. The fibulae selected, for example, consist of crossbow tendril brooches, crossbow brooches with a closed…
Graves With Sarmatian Features at the Grave Fields of the Late Roman Period Voytenki and Zachepilovka
One of the most important problems in the study of the Chernyakhiv culture is the study of cultural traditions, among them the Sarmatian one. A comparative study of the manifestation of the signs of the Sarmatian element on the «side» and «dune» cemeteries in the region is important, for which Voytenki and Zachepilovka are now undoubtedly «basic» monuments. When identifying burials of the Late Scythian / Sarmatian cultural tradition, the presence…
