Spatio-temporal dynamics of platform labour
Although short-term rental platforms (e.g. Airbnb) are often not considered labour platforms, their suppliers must contend with demands on labour structured by the platforms. Using Lefebvre's rhythmanalysis, this article examines the spatio-temporal dynamics of cleaning labour for STR platforms through the experiences of student-migrant-workers in Montreal between 2017 and 2020. I argue that yield-focused STR operators (i.e. owner-operators and m…
Presumed Competent
Presumed competent, Asian Americans exhibit the highest level of education and median household income of all major US ethnoracial groups. On average, they outpace all groups in the domain of education, yet they do not maintain their advantage in the labor market. The question of bias against Asian Americans has taken center stage in the most recent US Supreme Court ruling on affirmative action, but the attention has been on university admissions…
Making ends meet’ by renting homes to strangers
Created to help its founders pay their rent during a housing crisis, Airbnb promotes its services as a supplemental income strategy to ‘make ends meet’ by renting their homes to strangers. This article compares Airbnb ‘home sharing’ to its historical precursor of taking lodgers and boarders in early industrial North American cities, an important form of supplemental income for women and one of the few remaining alternatives to wage income. Histor…

Economic potential and entry into marriage and cohabitation
This article explores the relationship between economic potential and rates of entry into marriage and cohabitation. Using data from the 1990 census and the 1980–1992 High School and Beyond (Sophomore Cohort), we developed a method for explicitly estimating five time-varying measures of earnings potential. The analyses of union formation are based on an intergenerational panel study of parents and children, to which our measures of earnings poten…
Social mobility and the educational choices of Asian Americans
Educational Expectations of Asian American Youths
The study presented here explored three factors that may explain why distinct Asian American groups have higher educational expectations than do whites : favorable socioeconomic and background characteristics, demonstrated academic ability, and parents' high expectations. With data from the National Educational Longitudinal Study, the authors used linear and logistic multivariate regression models to examine these differences in educational expec…
The Racial Identification of Biracial Children with One Asian Parent
This article examines the socioeconomic and demographic correlates that are associated with whether biracial children with an Asian parent are racially identified with their Asian parent or with their non-Asian parent. With data extracted from the 5-percent Public Use Microdata Sample (PUMS) of the 1990 census, we take into account explanatory variables at three levels: the child's characteristics, the parents' characteristics, and the locale's r…
