Archaeological survey of the Modder River dongas, Free State, South Africa
The semi-arid grasslands of the Free State Province of South Africa have produced the earliest evidence of the presence of Homo sapiens in the subcontinent, together with an extensive Pleistocene palaeoenvironmental record based on fossil assemblages. However, the known Middle Stone Age (MSA) archaeological sites in the Free State are limited to a few major localities that cannot be integrated into a unitary narrative, thus hindering our understa…
Ship ahoy! Prayers on the walls
We present 23 tracings of historical graffiti depicting boats and seafaring motifs, obtained from the walls of four churches on the island of Oléron in France. Through our analysis of all the engravings, we have established a chronology spanning from the Late Middle Ages to the 19th century. Our typological study has enabled us to identify the types of ships that sailed the oceans during the Age of Sail. Engravings of galleons, ships of the line,…
Site formation and post-sedimentary processes affecting Pleistocene archaeological record
The Quartzite and Quartz Reference Collection from the Cenieh (Spanish National Research Centre on Human Evolution), Spain
The dataset presented here is the quartzite and quartz reference collection from the National Research Centre of Human Evolution of Spain (CENIEH), Burgos. This dataset or online lithotheque consists of 73 archaeological and geological samples obtained in different projects in which the CENIEH has been involved in the last 15 years. Most of the samples described here were collected from the Iberian Peninsula, while a few others were chosen from E…
Using horse teeth to shape stone tools
Horse tooth retouchers have been identified in several Middle and Upper Palaeolithic sites. They have been typically characterised as 'soft' hammers and/or grouped into the category of 'bone retouchers' at a technical level. Bone and teeth have different chemical compositions; teeth are denser and heavier than bone, and consequently, their technological features should not be considered homologous. In this work, we experimentally tested the effec…
Les nodules sphériques de basalte de l’unité archéologique US2 du site de « Bois-de-Riquet », France
The flake microlithism in the European Pleistocene
Archaeological Survey in Guadalajara
The central Meseta is a high plateau located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula. Abundant evidence of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic occupations of the region contrasts with scarce evidence of a human presence during the early Upper Palaeolithic. On this basis, it has been suggested that climatic downturns triggered the temporary abandonment, or near abandonment, of the central Meseta during the Last Glacial period. We conducted three archaeolo…
A geometric-morphometric assessment of three-dimensional models of experimental cut-marks using flint and quartzite flakes and handaxes
Flint and Quartzite
Since the 1980s, several experimental analyses have been able to differentiate some lithic tool types and some of their raw materials according to the morphology of cut marks imprinted by such tools when used for butchering activities. Thus, metal tool use has been differentiated in contexts with an abundance of lithic tools, or even the use of hand axes has been documented in carcass processing, in contrast with simple unretouched or retouched f…
